2025 Monkeymatic Palisade 30w (Liverpool, non traditional)

Post by xtian »

I have had a Heyboer transformer set in the closet for a while, and an old chassis from RJ. Based on the success of my 15w non-traditional Liverpool, I'm building a 30w version, with a LND150 input gain stage, and a PI "soak" master volume (50K pot in series with 1K PI cathode resistor). This build also qualifies as a "beaks and feet" build, meaning only parts I have on hand.

Does it still count as "beaks and feet" if you have been collecting bird parts for years? :D

Where did you get those plastic grommets? Looks like they would be handy for repairs on old amps that didn't come with any but clearly should have.

Grommet Strips Molded. I think I got these from mcmaster.com. Heat them until flexible. I think 0.75" diameter holes are about as small as practical.

I like those tube sockets. Where to source them?
Better tone through mathematics.

They are standard tube sockets, with the addition of Lou's PCBs: https://luigiretro.com

All done. Good sound, but brutally loud out of the gate; no bedroom manners. I already dump half the gain after the second triode. Also lowered NFB resistor from 100K to 50K. Will swap in 12AT7s tomorrow, for lower gain. Otherwise, very good!

I was going to use a single cathode resistor for the power tubes, and started with 75R. Proved to be way too hot, so added a second 25W resistor in series for 120R total. Silly waste of space. Maybe I'll split the cathodes later.

Really innovative layout - but still looks TW at heart. Very impressive!

I installed a crossline MV (Type 3), and am enjoying the result. However, I accidentally connected the MV pot to the plates of the PI, instead of the power tube grids. What do you think the result was? Noise? Badly scratchy pot? Weird tone? None of the above! I moved the wires to the proper place, and the MV sounded exactly the same as when wired wrong.

Makes sense, though a nasty trick on the next guy to work on it if you didn't correct the error.

Built a cherry hardwood cabinet with walnut valence, gloss polyurethane, and got the faceplate installed. Glamor puss shots.
