Weller WHS40 soldering station

Post by Tdale »

I got this today. Haven't had the chance to try it yet, but I plugged it in briefly, just to see that it works. There is a green LED that lights up... But I'm not sure what it's for... looks like it shuts off when I turn the temperature down a bit, but if I turn it up again, it starts blinking, but doesn't shut off.....

Does anyone have the same model, and know how the LED works?

LED is on when the heater kicks in. Keeps flashing during idle, lights up more constant during use when you draw heat from the tip....
On initial turn-on, it lights constantly, then may be off for some seconds, as the temp overshoots from the longer on-cycle at turn-on.
Been using Wellers for over 40 yrs... got my first about 15-16 yrs old...

EDIT: Oh-maybe the simpler answer - LED is on when temp is below the set value....goes out if temp rises above set - keeps flashing when heater is on to maintain temp.....

Thanks!

This is my first variable-temperature iron. What temperature is ideal for "normal" soldering (resistors, caps, tube sockets etc.)? What about soldering wires to a pot-casing, or more heavy gage bus-bar soldering?

300-350 for general components, - slightly depending on component and/or lead size.... 300 or slightly lower for tiny parts...
380 or so for heavier components...you'll have to practice..... :)
I usually ask students to make stick men out of soldering wire only, after some basic tuition.... good training.

If you have any dealings with ELFA or other suppliers, get one of these...

also keep the sponge wet and use it!

40Watts just may be on the lighter side for heavy joints, you'll just have to test your way..
Good luck!
