Miles I have read some Plato but I'm a Bertrand Russell man myself. Anyone who has even a slight interest in Philosophy should read 'History of western Philosophy'. Amazing book, although at 900 pages it's quite a commitment.

I agree with your comments about modern life/internet/phone etc but I'll add that like any powerful medium it has the potential for good and bad. For all the Bad things you've mentioned I would say there's an equal number of good things about facebook/social media/technology. I've regained contact with my Australian family after 40 years and that would never have happened. People can spread 'good' informed information quickly and without censorship, we have been brainwashed and censored for years by 'teachers, parents, society, governments and especially the media. There's at least the possibility now of finding out some truths if you're careful and take some time.

After some of the recent terrorist events in Europe, people used social media to offer shelter, beds, food, homes to people caught up in it all, that was a great thing and just one example of the good that CAN be done.

Of course a tool is a tool to be used by a hand and the hand is where the ethos lives. I tend to want to say something viscious here. Sormething about NAZIs caring for their children too would be less inflamatory.

In this case, the tool isn't a simple object. It's an interacting force that needs you to tolerate all the things it's doing in the background, the things you see across the fulcrum of that balance beteen good or bad, and that which you don't imagine. I think there is a misimagining of what this all means to us as a civilization.

Facebook facilitates a negative net effect. It's not the only one. All of their purchased subsidiaries have been purposely developed to further tie people into more fractured groups without a fair knowledge of anything else.

Russell? You liberal puke. Peace mongering won't get you far. Off to the camps.. or, in the case of my post-Bohemian ancestors, how about a boat trip south to make a criminal colony for people convicted of coveting livestock. :)

Not speaking of Facebook, since unexposed or at least underexposed but secondhand. Appreciating Glaucon's querulous resonances.

And you're better off for it.

Maybe I'll get more Likes if I start a gold mine, then cover the Sound of Silence when I bankrupt a production company. I've asked Reeltarded to produce it. We're running for President. We've got a plan that'll fix everything. My life is in crisis because I didn't get a Like in the last five minutes. It'll be better if I switch genders. I'm sensing your anger and hostility. I need a Safe Zone or an HR Director. I'll have to take the rest of the day off.

I started a political party. The Entropy Party. There were lots of supporters but only because they didn't understand why.

It is what it is. I think facebook is rwally falling out of favor with the younger generation. You know their parents and grandparents are on there now. It's not cool anymore. I've used Facebook to my benefit to expand my business and make moonbats cry.

I recently deleted my FB profile after about 10 years (Jesus, it's been that long?) Of using it almost every day.

It's amazing how much better life is. I could barely stand FB during the election cycle, and then after it was pretty much a slightly tempered version of that albeit not much.

I don't know about other repair techs, but my impression is that most musicians fall more on the liberal scale of political beliefs. So, with a FB friends list absolutely chock full of my clients the rage and frustration with government got to be a little absurd. FWIW I'm not even a trump supporter but watching these people rant for almost a year straight. Jesus. The Hyperbole. So I deleted my account. My first thought was how much business I was going to lose. However that never became an issue. Now people email and call me for repairs, instead of FB messaging (which i prefer) and I have the benefit of not being exposed to the highly curated new cycle machine. Never felt better.

Interesting that defines exactly how I as a liberal felt during the Obama years, and I was an Obama supporter. Now let's not go into any political discussion, instead lets remember that honestly all of that toxicity you're discussing didn't exist when I was young and liberals and conservatives were friendly and friends! Now the BS propaganda machine of the corporations, media, and billionaires in the world are working hard to divide us. If you stay divided, and believe all that hype, you're making things worse for everyone on the planet. So basically, my 2c is that we need to learn to care about each other again instead of thinking of one another as enemies. We both want the same things. Freedom to be who we want to be without being judged by others. That, in a nutshell, is what this is all about... Facebook is a great platform for people to spread lies and BS and everyone just believes it.

for 8 of those 10 years, you were hearing your own echo chamber that reinforced the false idea that Obama ruined america. It's the media, corporations and billionaires that are. I still think you seem to be a pretty damn cool guy and would never hold your conservative opinions as a reason to change that idea.

Phil, with all due respect (and that's sincere) the vast majority of my FB friends fall heavily on the liberal side of things and have since I started a FB account. If anything the echo chamber the algorithm threw me into was the "Hillary Clinton is the bright shining hope for all things good" with a little bit of Bernie Sanders thrown in.
I heard plenty of bitching in my daily feed about every little thing the opposition did.

And quite frankly I just got tired of the moaning. It's nothing new. People have been bitching about "thier side" losing since Democratically held elections have been around. But FB (and the 24hr news cycle before it) has honed it into a fine art.

It also has completely soured political discourse on the micro level too. You cannot have a real and frank discussion on real politics on FB. "Equality of Conditions vs Equality of Opportunity?" Forget it. You cannot have a real debate over the fundamentals that undergird American politics or political theory without someone getting thier feelings hurt and calling each other a Fascist or Racist.

We citizens. Only about half of us could ever be deep enough to pick a candidate if we tried real hard. I'm not a republican. That'sinsanity. I am an actual conservative. I don't think the government should hand out $1bn to a phd program in a senator's district nor should they pretend that schools are good and need more funding and by the way two submarines are a huge waste for a jobs program.

Everything is all spend. Ask yourself. The economy is a lie. It hasn't been good since a person could take out a 15 year note on a $7000 house and a baby cost $400 from conception to arrival. Then they mandated insurance covered pregnancy and the next day it cost $4000.

Free. Free country, just keep your mouth shut if you don't know the right words to inflame.

Notice corporate profits are considered "the economy". Right on. Taxless because they give money to the charities you choose from off their lists and into their "foundations" and write that off... your money.. right out of your pockets to feel good about a pink ribbon poster you bought when you purchased their $2.49 poorly mixed soft drink that took 11 minutes to get while you waited in a parking space marked "Reserved For Drive-Thru Customers".

American exceptionalism is my exception. I am all the exception I can find.

This last 50 years has been a farcical lie of happiness and comfort while actually being a mafiatization of politics and business. They weaponized the simple life and you are the tool. Do not buy the neghbor as a hater. Your neihbors have been sold down the river at every turn. They don't know how to negotiate all the garbage. They weren't taught to discern; only to rage.

In other news, I have 10 people that I know whom agree deletion of Facebook has been a very positive thing in their lives.

Fuck what's for breakfast and a big pile of so what. People think I am watxhing them live.. that's rich enough.
