We haven't yet mentioned the abuse of suppliers and how many companies have been forced in bankruptcy due to Apple's rape and pillage philosophy. Giving Apple your money is giving similar to funding a terrorist organization. :P
You're straight trippin' now.

And please don't twist my words. I never suggested a Mac specifically as a solution to malware. I suggested it as an option to someone who was considering retiring their XP machine. I'm agnostic when it comes to platforms. I really don't care so long as you can harden your machine with current updates and other countermeasures.

What about a Chromebook? Next you're going to tell me how Google is the devil? Skynet?

Intrusive junk.

Apple and Google can suck it.

Privacy is over... It is somewhat sad that my child will never know a time when there was some anonymity..

If you use a credit/debit card, carry a cell phone (smart phones are even worse), drive a car, use a browser on the internet, and a 1000 other ways, etc.... you're being tracked.

Funny... I have a friend that has nice security cameras on the outside of his house. I like this example because I think it helps illustrate a point. Anyway.. he has cameras on his house.. and he takes a high resolution picture of every car that drives by. Then he OCRs the photo, takes the license plate data and stuffs it into a text file next to the date and time. What does he do with the data? Not much... but this is one data point. Imagine all the information that can be told on that one data point over a period of time on a not-so-busy, unremarkable, residential road.

Anyway, bitching about privacy and Apple on TAG isn't doing any good. :)

Sorry about that twisting. I just read the thread again. I apologize.

My new monitor is an ACER K272HL, the cheapest 27" I could find. Got good reviews "for the price".

My CPU is a very elderly Dell Optiplex GX-280 with a newer hard disk in it. A quick look on the web shows lots of folks upgrading this "old warhorse" but I wouldn't have two clues to rub together about that.

Sounds like Windows 10 is my best option in operating system....

Update: talked with my ex-colleague computer guy. He says it would cost more to upgrade the basic CPU than it would cost to buy a new refurbished Dell off their website, with Windos 7 or 8 in it, then go to 10 in a couple of weeks.
Yeah, I have a GX280 still running Windows 7. I think I went through a power supply and a couple hard drives on it.. Good, solid computer and it is still spinning (we have Win 7 on it).

Your monitor has DVI and VGA input connections.

Here's a Dell Optiplex 780 for $129. It's an older model..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 52_desktop

This has both display port (DP) and VGA connections. It comes with Windows 7 which I think is a work horse. Windows 8 will frustrate you. Windows 10 is still unreleased, but promises to be better than 8.

You may need a DP to DVI adapter for this one if you want higher resolutions your monitor. I can't remember where VGA maxes out at...

http://www.monoprice.com/Category?c_id= ... id=1024608

$129 bucks... Windows 7 so you're still going to receive Windows Updates for at least 5 more years. And I think the transition from XP to Windows 7 from a usability standpoint will be easier and more familiar to you.

Thanx brentm, that GX780 is indeed a good price.

Unfortunately I'm in Canada, and by the time I ship a CPU that heavy across the border, about $100 I would guess, ->$229, then add 25% because the $CDN is only worth US$0.80 these days-->+57= CDN $286, then add 12% (that's right, 12%) sales tax on the total less shipping cost-->CDN$20, my delivered cost is CDN$306!!

Fortunately newegg.ca, their Canadian website, has a refurbed GX760 w/Windows 7 Pro for CDN$269 + $4.99 shipping. Isn't it strange how close that is to importing one from the States? No coincidence there I'm sure.

How does the 760 stack up against the 780? Maybe I should just get Windows 7 for my GX280, what does that cost?

Windows 7 Pro runs about US $135, street price. Don't know about across the boarder. For the price of the computer, IMO, it doesn't pay to just buy Windows. At the moment, Win 10 upgrades are free, but you have to get on the band wagon now, before they put a price on it.

Do you have a link?

I found this one...

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... -_-Product

OptiPlex 780... has a 1TB drive, and 8GB of ram.. along with a Core 2 E8400 processor. Not too shabby! The photo has a big gaping hole where a DVD drive goes, but the listing says "DVD-ROM" is included.

I see a 760 on there... 4GB ram and a 1TB HD. Windows 7 pro. $199 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... -_-Product

Either one would do just fine... my only question is the video outputs. I would guess they both have VGA or DVI. And you can always order adapters from Monoprice.

As for upgrading your existing to Windows 7.... doable. I'd recommend getting a new hard drive, and doing a clean install of Win7 64bit. Then you can roll your old drive back in should something go awry and you aren't left with a non-working PC. Financially, I think this model only works if you can get a free licensed copy of Windows from someone you know. Otherwise, you're better off getting a refurb.... like your former colleague mentioned.

Gotta say that I still have 2 XP machines with antivirus connected to the web. I don't keep sensitive data on them, but they are working fine. They get a little sick sometimes, so have my Win 7 machines, but I quick reinstall fixes everything. Just keep your data somewhere else, as mentioned.

You can get a copy of Windows anything via torrent. Works great. Arrrrrr, maties. Just sayin...

I recently moved my system over to Linux Mint 17.1 and am never looking back. Stuff just works. It's quick. The interface is very intuitive for an ex-Windows user. Security is way ahead and simpler.

It works, and it's nice, but it makes my five year old HP run slow. Slow to the point where it acts like it locks up but if you wait a few minutes (yes, minutes) it comes back. Mostly when running either Chromium or Firefox with multiple tabs open. My identical laptop running Win7 just cruises along without any issues at all. I can even stream Netflix on it without any hitches.

I am very wary of Win10, since Win8 blows, and I don't know what kind of hardware 10 is going to require.

But to get back on track, I opened this site on my Linux laptop because I have no worried about that one getting infected. After reading the post about the site being safe, I also opened it on my Win7 desktop, throwing caution to the wind. Sort of. Avast hasn't told me there are any problems so here I am.
