Maybe jail was a bit severe.

Yes, you can sometimes miss sarcasm in text but I don't really find it sarcastic or funny after Newtown.

Maybe they wanted to set an example of what is unacceptable these days.

I think young people are much to naive these days on all kinds of social media.

The key word is media, which can be defined as:
"Information that can reach or influence people widely"

These kids these days don't have a clue that everything they put on their Facebook or similar is there for all to see, depending on their security settings of course.

Hey it's on the internet.....forever.

But... and I know you will disagree, to me what you are saying is that people in the entertainment business should have more rights than some dumb kid who thinks they are making a joke (entertainment, just not business) on the Internet.
No, you've mistaken my intention. I don't think those kinds of songs are cool, either, but I don't think what this kid did was cool in light of the current environment for online posts.

There's some basic common sense rules that a lot of people don't understand...you don't just get to do what you want cuz you think it's ok anymore. Someone somewhere is going to be offended and report your comment.

Way too many people think local (it's all about me, me me!) and not global (Hey, I wonder if this housewife knew I was kidding about that FB post...wait...are those police cars in the driveway?) when they put stuff online.

I've got some strong opinions on how messed up youth of today are with violent video games, entitlement, and "Hey it's cool, no one takes me seriously!"...right up until what happened to this kid and his FB comment.

Now he takes it seriously, from what I read. Too bad hindsight is always 20/20. More people have to "think it all the way through, and look beyond the end of their nose" before they post stuff online, IMO.

It's not "all good" and fun and games anymore. I bet you this Justin kid thinks about what he posts a whole bunch differently now. Not saying what happened to him is right, either. It just is what it is in the current environment.

U.S. Constitution, 1st Amendment wrote:Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Any abridgment of freedom of speech goes against the Constitution.
Supreme Court Justice Brandeis wrote: Those who won our independence ... believed that freedom to think as you will and to speak as you think are means indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth; that without free speech and assembly discussion would be futile; that with them, discussion affords ordinarily adequate protection against the dissemination of noxious doctrine; that the greatest menace to freedom is an inert people; that public discussion is a political duty; and that this should be a fundamental principle of the American government.
Thus, the best response to "noxious doctrine", as was posted on FaceBook in this instance, is public discussion and NOT prison and/or abridgment of freedom of speech.

Bingo. FB, Twitter, etc has changed radically what's ok to say online. This kid in Texas just found out the hard way.

Right on. I wholeheartedly disagree with just about everything you said, but I still respect your opinion. Gotta go read some Vonnegut now.

Brandenburg v. Ohio was an incitement to riot case that dealt with the limits to speech. The holding in Brandenburg was that the threat had to be "likely and imminent" in order to be taken seriously. Carter's rant was neither. Brandenburg doesn't directly apply, but puh-leeze. The kid is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and woefully insensitive, but he's not a threat. I live in Newtown and know what a real threat looks like.

What would Dwayne Hoobler do?

It's wrong what they have done to this kid. I won't read from a list of approved controvercy.

.. but I was not a sarcastic kid, so I said nothing.

Sounds familiar to me. Nanny says no, then nanny scolds, then nanny arrests, then nanny kills. I don't need nanny becoming mine.

Not sure if it's me you're disagreeing with, Structo, Nick C or who, but it's cool for you to disagree IMO. That's your right, and I support that.

I'm basing my opinion on dinosaur age morals/ethics, and what I think is common sense for child upbringing and teaching your kids some respect for others, whether it's online or in person. I realize a lot of that isn't popular because it requires parents and their kids to be responsible for their actions, and think twice about their actions before they commit them.

There's far too many knee jerk reactions going on (such as that lady who reported this kid Justin in Texas) without proper research.

But sadly, there's a whole pile of "Shoot/report/bitch first, then figure out if it was justified or not" type thinking these days.

I feel bad for the kids of today, who will wind up reaping even worse rewards of the "it's all good" mentality of their kids if it doesn't get straightened out.

I guarantee you one thing, this Justin kid is going to think real long and hard before he posts anything remotely controversial on FB in the future...if he's smart.

I guess we'll see.

Having been put in jail for doing nothing wrong I feel for him.

And that's why I now have a soundproof demo room...

Adolescence is a recent societal construct. He is a man. Just like us.

They make examples of any one of us because zero tolerance is miserable and for the people by the machine. If one can't deal with it we are all lowered into the vat.

Here, you'll love this and hate me.

"War on drugs"

Aside, even my moniker here is too politically incorrect for some to type. It's a compound word that literally says "recording made me stupid" but the kid gloves never really fit me well. So.

I would do very well in a zombie apocalypse. I am doing ok in a zombie apocalypse now. ;)

Well, i know I've learnt something from all of this: When the rest of my remaining clients move there pcb design & layout work outside the country, and I can longer afford to keep a roof over my head, I know just what to do to get my free meal ticket. Lawyer? Nope don't need one. I'm good....

We must find a common misdemeanor that we can all be proud of.

Winking attempted manslaughter in the 11th degree. I thought of a guy who thought of killing a guy he never met for making a joke about him as a character in a novel.

Something like that. No harm. All foul.

If he killed someone and claimed self defense, he'd probably be free by now.

I can vouch for testing a 9w amp at 2pm and going to jail for it 9.5 hours later for "loud unreasonable noise" as a common thing we can all do.

Just open your windows, aim your speakers at your goofiest neighbor for 10 minutes while playing a few test riffs, and you'll have cops visiting you in no time.

The above is dependent on you having a wacky neighbor that hates guitar players to the point of fabricating an offense and lying about the time it happened however, so it may not work for all.

I've been there and done that 12 years and 14 days ago, so I consider myself to be among the leaders of this particular offense in this century. LOL

You outlaw!

When I was umm 18 I took a pair of Boogie 100s into my pal's driveway and played Tie Your Mother down up to maybe the second verse. We were prepping stuff for a road trip and standing in the driveway 'bout 40 minutes later when the cops rolled up and said "Found you!". Awww

I think I can get away with anything here, I don't try it much though. Neighbors are pretty well spaced and obviously tolerant to shenanigans. Besides, I saved their kids from gator attack.

They DO know the difference between 50 and 200 watts. hahah

This sure makes my earlier post seem prophetic. I know I'm not this good, but holy crap this didn't take long.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/1 ... 99238.html

"A teenager in a Chicago suburb was charged with a felony after threatening to commit "mass homicide" should George Zimmerman be acquitted of murder charges in the Trayvon Martin case, according to multiple reports.

The threat, which was made on the 15-year-old's Twitter account on Friday (before a verdict had been reached), read, "If Zimmerman leaves free imma shoot everybody in Zion causing a mass homicide, and ill get away wit it just like Zimmerman." The tweet appears to have been deleted."

But they have a screen shot of the tweet, so he's not off the hook.

Like I said before. You can't write anything you want to online and think you're hidden behind a screen name and safe on your keyboard.

And yes, Reel, I am an outlaw. LOL
