Brownote Foxy 18

Post by ampmike »

I build a Foxy 18 that I got from brownote a couple years ago.EF86 really sweet sounding amp.Im making one for a friend now.He liked the notch switch. You get 6 different sounds. We got Mercury Transformers and they were twice the cost of the heyboers so I can really see in the end result if these will sound better.I have to still do the notch switch kinda a pain in the but. Anybody ever do one of these? Mikey

Nice looking cabs, Mike! (you know in the thread with the nice looking cabs)

So, the 6 position tone. What's that like? Is it all caps, or an inductor thing? I have a thing coming up with an Ef86 added just before a cathode follower that I know needs drive control, but I'd love to be able to control it seperately from the tone stack that follows as well.

I had considered building one of those amps before BN had their troubles.

Here is the layout I had.

I built one for a friend also. It's a great sounding amp. I will be pretty surprised if you hear any difference in trannys. The rotary switch is best done out of the amp. The hard part is telling all the tiny caps apart.

This is the switch. The 6 resisters that go inbetween the lugs I got the wrong value. Also would you guy say they are 1/4 watt? Can 1/2 watt be substituted?Im just about ready to light this thing up.It will be my first build sourcing all the parts and using a blank chassis. In the picture Im holding up a 1/2 watt next to the 5.1 resister to show the size difference. The brownote kit took awhile to get but Moss really has a great business.H is stuff was quality and all his amps were winners! Anyway just a bit more to go and I will have my answer about the trannies.

All those are doing is isolating the cap selections, so it's total overkill, but will work fine, afaict.

You make a better hand model than me.

lol

Thanks I watch what I eat  Well then can I use 1/4 watt almost any value? They call for 5.1 M and I have some Green-Brown- Red tiny 1/4 watt.

Not enough to isolate, I think. I don't know how to figure what the low side of that value could be.. Wait a second, a genius will show up!

Well I decided to try to lite this up and I have sound,Just flabby intermitten week signal.Anybody have any ideas.I worked on it all day.Im going to keep trying different stuff and checking transformer wireing.Measure the pots.
it just sucks because now the removing of wires makes it all look sloppy. But I guess this is where the learning comes in.Im going to try to come up with some voltage readings as well.Mikey

Mikey, do a simple bypass on that tone rig to make sure you haven't loaded the front end so far there is no input! That might be due to the low resistance leaking all across the caps there.. I imagine you might get what you hear from that.

If that doesn't fimd a problem, start probing around each stage in reverse at the tube, starting with the PI input, V1 and 2 removed, then add v2, probe and poke, add v1.. probe and poke. If you hear a noise while you are working your way back to the input, you found trouble.

Mark isn't resting. He is furiously building amps so he can make us look lazy. Tell him I said hey, and STOP THAT! ;)
