I don't want offend any of you that own these 'aged' guitars but I really thought this craigslist ad was a riot. Like how was it supposed to get the cigarette burn? Smokeless tobacco?
Mint condition fender road worn strat for sale. Sunburst with maple neck. Never gigged and kept in smoke free environment.

That's pretty funny.

I took my old '73 Strat into a guitar shop once to try out an amp. When I pulled it out of the case the kid working there said "Cool aging job, did you do it yourself?"

I replied "Yeah, but it took me forty years."

Something else along those lines is when we tint the clear lacquer on a guitar to give it that "smoky bar"patina.

But I was always curious as to what happens when the lacquer actually yellows?

I resisted relics for about five years then I had to build one.
My idea was to create a well used '61 Strat in Sonic Blue. :D

I always wanted a Fender in Lake Placid Blue. I built a left-handed Tele, used the Reranch stuff. Must have put a gazillion coats of blue followed by two gazillion coats of clear coat.

Within a week I found a chip in it to the wood. I'm too damn lazy to fix it, so I will probably resort to relic'ing it.

The Lake Placid Blue is so cool, because depending on the angle the hue of the blue changes from baby blue to dark blue. And hey, let's not forget "The Man With The Blue Guitar"

The man bent over his guitar,
A shearsman of sorts. The day was green.

They said, "You have a blue guitar,
You do not play things as they are."

The man replied, "Things as they are
Are changed upon the blue guitar."

And they said then, "But play, you must,
A tune beyond us, yet ourselves,

A tune upon the blue guitar
Of things exactly as they are."

I don't get the relic idea at all.
If you wait long enough your guitar will get there and you will remember every ding and gouge that it has accumulated.

I try to take care of my guitars but you can't avoid getting a ding or two if you use them.

I like them clean but that doesn't mean I wouldn't or don't own a few beaters also.

What you do to your guitar is your business.

Here is a picture of my 53 Tele.

They don't get much cleaner than this.

Guitars were meant to play. In the big '80s, I used to spin my bursts when I got really drunk. Never disaster forever. ;)

Three versions of played. '56, '55, '57 (scarface).

Scarface was once top oversprayed with see-through cherry. The scar had a name hand painted on there and someone went stupid removing it with chemicals instead of a plastic spoon.

I never got the relic idea either and certainly not the absolutely ludicrous pricing relicing fetches. Seems kind of like bulking up on steroids: Vain, cheap, and only a crude imitation of the original without any of honesty. Nobody wants to work anymore. Just give me the end result...now.

As if playing a relic somehow brings your chops closer to your heroes. Well, I certainly can't knock the marketing though...

Yeah, if I were going to pay Fender that kind of money for a guitar, I'd go the other way. Apparently Fender has a room in their retail store across from the factory where they have every neck shape, body color and pickup configuration they ever made (mostly) and you can pick and choose your preferences. Then they build what you pick. Heavy $$$ I'm sure.

Nice gold tops Miles.

Yes there is a fine line between realistic aging (relic) and a guitar that was obviously damaged by someone that has no idea what an old guitar looks like.

I had to do one just to see if I could.
I'll tell you what, putting that first dent and scratch into a perfectly finished guitar was one of the hardest things I have ever done. (guitar wise)

Because to properly relic a guitar it should start out with a show room finish.

As a student of music since I was 8 years old, I was always taught to treat musical instruments with great care and respect.

The first time I saw Pete Townshend destroy a guitar, I felt nauseous. :(

I confess. I have destroyed guitars, but not as many as Delta or UPS, and never as interesting as those. Travis Bean, '68 Goldtop, 10 or 12 Ibanez 450s, and by proxy a Tobias Explorer.

Ask my buddy Gil what it feels like to bounce a '58 V. hahaha champagne.. anyone?

Well, now that I think about it, I did destroy a guitar.

It was my first electric, some kind of 335 copy from Sears and Robucks.

I had a Sunn tube amp and I couldn't turn up that guitar past bedroom levels before it started howling feedback.
So one night a friend was over and we had smoked a J.
All of a sudden I turned the amp all the way up and smashed the guitar into the floor.
Sounded pretty cool actually.
My mother yelled, what was that?
