Cleaning up the member list?
I was looking for fellow member in the list and I couldn't get over the number of members who have never made a post, some of them go back to 2006.
Perhaps we need to run a script to get rid of the dead wood?
There are just pages and pages of people with no posts.

Mark,
You know me. If I try to run a script like that I will only screw it up and delete the whole site.

Re: Cleaning up the member list?
I often click on names I see come up that I don't recognize and find that they have been members since '06 or '08 or something, but have no posts. I suspect a lot of that wood is still wick, it just doesn't sprout. Maybe date of last visit or login would be a better gauge.
But, 74% of the members have never posted.

I'm a member on another forum that purges members who haven't log in 18 months. Also, how many join just to post an ad in the FS section. If it was up to me, one could not post an ad without having at least 10 posts.

You gotta find room for geeks like me that like the old in and out bit.

Re: Cleaning up the member list?
I tend to have a gap year from time to time, but I have a few posts behind me. I tend to think no posts for a couple of years, it is safe to bump them off the member list.
If it comes down to a manual task divide up the numbers, then allocate them, I'm happy to assist in cleaning up the forum.

Re: Cleaning up the member list?
I would like to offer my programming experience to help out. I've made a career out of being able to not fuck things up, and recover systems when someone else fucked them up.
I would suggest starting very conservatively and see the results. Let's say we take someone who has never logged in five years and never posted. See what that does to shrink things. Then we can drop it to 4,3,2 or less.
I believe anyone who has ever posted should not be deleted. Even a single post asking for help has often turned into a wealth of information.
I can do this offline as a test run and everyone can inspect the results before we do anything. Not even sure I need a complete DB dump. User list, number of posts and last login would be sufficient.
If there's a concern about me having a db dump, I can probably screen scrape and still give some results.

Re: Cleaning up the member list?
As far as I know, you have to be a member and login to actually be able to see pictures posted. Other sections you can't even read without being logged in. I was a member for many years before posting anything. But I read quite a bit during that time. So, to my mind, the date of the last login is more relevant than the date of the last/any post.
Just my 2 cents,
Mike

Re: Cleaning up the member list?
Mike the trouble is there is so many of these guys with no posts that date back as far as 2006.
Agreed we do have to decide on conditions that have to be met to delete them. You have to bear in mind these guys can always sign up again.
I think we all agree the member list is in need of a bit of housekeeping.

Yes, I would guess that there is indeed quite a bit that could be trimmed. Just pointing out that there may be a difference between someone who has a last post 5 years ago and someone that has not even logged in in 5 years. The person who's last post was five years ago may have logged in yesterday. That is all I was pointing out.
