I just tell them I don't do solid state. There may be a tube or valve in there but it's mostly sand.

Just tell him Line6 amps are like Bic lighters; when they run out of gas you just replace them (with a Zippo). If he looks at you funny, show him the back panel where it clearly states: No User Serviceable Parts Inside, Do Not Open.

When someone asks me to fix a solid state amp, I only agree if it is likely to be a bad jack, or some other mechanical problem that even I can figure out. I tell them quite honestly - I know nothing about solid state circuitry, and wouldn't know how to trouble shoot the amp otherwise. I have ended up fixing 3 of them with these conditions though - they often use such crappy mechanical parts, that this is what ends up being the problem.

Just be careful with your soldering iron. When removing a PCB mounted jack or pot, if you apply too much heat, the traces can start to lift - which is not a good thing.

You could always gut the thing, and turn it into a real amp, and just tell him it is fixed.

Actually, although they are not my taste at all, lots of people use them happily.

bench fee - to decide if its fixable - that way you win if its an easy fix, win if its toast.

Look in the tool thread for "hammer".

The Bogner-based Spider Valve MkIIs aren't bad - the sand is in a module off to the side, the rest is a pretty basic tube amp. If it ain't the tube stuff, order more sand.

Told him, I only service tube amps. He says to me "Oh no worries, this is an all tube amp"

So I got suckered into it, so he says sometime next week he'll bring it in.

Dang it. I hate dealing with cheaply and mass produced DVD players err I mean tube amps.

There's two things you never wanna do:

Reveal to the wife that you know how to vacuum......

Tell anybody at work anything.....

Yeah. It walks in and you say no. Easy.

I said no so much people don't call me for anything anymore. Fine to a point. Life is easier now that I am not kissing everyone's butt and making up the losses with volume.
