Beatles
Anybody else catch the Beatle tribute last night? I caught about half and DVRed the rest.
Joe Walsh, Jeff Lynne and George Harrisonson's son did a tasty version of Something. I kept seeing Peter Frampton backing everyone up on guitar, but they did not announce him in the parts I saw. I don't usually go for these overblown tribute things, but what I saw was pretty good.
Fun trivia... Ringo and Joe Walsh are brothers in law.

Re: Beatles
I saw it.
Joe played a couple of nice strats. Mayer had a two rock and was the other amp a Dumble? Not that familiar with them.
Peter was using his 335 with a Marshall and Luke had a Bogner amp.
Brad Paisleys guitar sounded awful! Was it the wireless system? Cause his stuff always sounds great but last nite just buzzing and fizz...
Paul has still got it!!

In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Re: Beatles
The Framster was also on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" and to this day still uncredited, although the remixed reissue did mention many musicians who couldn't be mentioned in the original pressing because their record companies would have objected. According to Bobby Whitlock, the basic tracking was mostly done with the Derek & the Dominos band, sans Duane. Bobby says he never saw Pete or some of the other credited musos BUT there were lots of overdub sessions and a few basics BW wasn't there for.Gibsonman63 wrote:I kept seeing Peter Frampton backing everyone up on guitar, but they did not announce him in the parts I saw.
Pete's Fingertips instrumental album is still a knockout. If you all haven't heard it yet, go ahead and feast your ears.
down technical blind alleys . . .
Re: Beatles
The house band was a knockout-Don Was, Kenny Aronoff, Lukather and Frampton plus others-they rocked!
Paisley's tone was odd, but he played great, very tasteful.
John Legend excellent, Alicia Keyes too busy being a diva.
Joe Walsh great both appearances. While My Guitar with Joe and Gary Clark Jr was just great, with Dave Grohl kicking their asses really really good.
Annie Lennox-great.
Sgt Pepper into A Little Help--time stopped.
Magic.

Re: Beatles
Being of the generation of people who saw the original Ed Sullivan show, this walk down memory lane was bitter sweet. I was favorably impressed with the way many of the musicians resisted the temptation to put their own style into it and did a great job of sticking the "original script" as well as they did. It didn't seem like the place to showboat and they were very respectful in this regard. Paul and Ringo seemed to be enjoying themselves in the audience, too. (Who will ever know what they really thought.) In all, it was a great evening.
There is mention of Brad Paisley's guitar (playing). IMHO, he should have left it backstage. I thought it was the single low point in the show. The tone was dreadful and his playing was out of sync with whatever was going on. I know he's a star. I think he should have known better or was screwed by the soundman.
Meanwhile, on the Bio channel, they ran a retrospective on Freddy Mercury and, for the life of me, I don't know why they put it up against a Beatles tribute. It ran again in the time slot after the Beatles show -- a bit late for my taste, but I managed to see a good chunk of it before I nodded off. It was quite a story. Highly recommended.

Probably the only time that pairing of songs has ever been done live with more Beatles than just Paul performing.

I figure they are musicians. They're saying, Hey this band is pretty good eh?Phil_S wrote:Paul and Ringo seemed to be enjoying themselves in the audience, too. (Who will ever know what they really thought.)
Oh, those guys did a pretty good job on that one didn't they? and such.
Also, right on Phil. I saw the original performance, and it is not an exaggeration-it changed my life.
It showed us all that there was an alternative to just being what your parents had been in the 50s.
You could be different-and it was ok.

Re: Beatles
The show was fun. I am not sure I agree that Paul still has it vocally. He was having a bit of trouble on some of those songs.
I didn't enjoy the guitar tones of the guitarists that play in Paul's band so much. The tones don't fit to my ear. Sounds like some Marshall stuff and Divided By 13?

Still rehashing the same old tired shit. Misery. I waited until the end of the line to say.
I like the original recordings, and that is where worship ends for me.

Re: Beatles
i agree with reel
i dont mean to dump on anybody and they are without argue some of the greatest musicians to have ever lived
i just cant stand listening to anything by them anymore though, went through a huge beatles phase in adolescence and i guess i just played them out for myself...
shame really that i cant enjoy such great music, maybe because the songs are so good that they get stuck in my head for days and make me resent them

Re: Beatles
I thought John Mayer's guitar pyrotechnics in "Don't Let Me Down" were completely inappropriate. Don't get me wrong, I dig John Mayer, but honestly, Keith Urban's solo was much more tasteful, and he clearly heard the changes. Katy Perry can go pound doodoo.

Re: Beatles
I love the Beatles.
Each one by themselves, not so much.
I also think that Paul should hang it up as he is sounding more and more geriatric as time goes on.
Thanks for the memories boys!
But, I have all the Beatle songs on vinyl and CD.

Re: Beatles
Got to say, and its almost heresy for a brit but I don't get the Beatles, never have and probably never will, maybe its the hype or just my taste in music, now if we were talking about Rush, that is what I call talent , ditto Gary Moore, SRV, Steve Lukather etc, I sure you get the idea.
My old lady is a huge Beatles fan whereas my old man loathes them, I do however real wish Paul would disappear and just give it a rest, he doesn't sound that good anymore and gives us brit musos a bad name lol
