NW Garage Bands

Post by LeftyStrat »

I've always made it a priority to learn the musical scenes of everywhere I have lived. It's amazing to me that a small group of individuals in Athens, GA, defined the sound of a decade, or that a group of flannel shirt wearing guys defined a different decade in the nineties.

But going back, the NW produced some great garage bands, including the guys that did Louie Louie. My fav is this:

The Sonics were seriously rocking.

My Dad was a Navy aviator, so we lived everywhere, including Whidbey Island, WA in '63—'65.

For one thin dollar we'd hear many of these bands on Fridays. Fun memories of gtrs, drums, Hammonds & Leslies echoing around the roller rink.

Baxtercat, shared your post with my wife and she told me her grandfather was stationed there around the same time.

She also informed me these guys are still touring (yeah, she's a northwestern girl). It blew my mine to see young people digging them in Oslo:

Whidbey Island and the other islands are beautiful!

Worked on a job at Widbey in the 80's for several weeks.

Great crabbing, fishing, clamming, etc.

Got to see a pod of Orca's while there.

Not these but similar.

There is a big Naval Airstation there.

Saw a lot of EA-6B Prowler's.
Very, very loud!

At the front gate they have a sign that says,
"Please forgive the noise, it is the sound of freedom"

I honestly can't imagine growing up in the northwest. If I got used to the beauty I can see every day, sometimes just turning a corner and seeing the sound or those snow capped mountains, it's hard to imagine leaving.Though Monterey might be enough to seduce me. I had a wonderful time there my one visit.

I wore out a copy of Sonics Boom when I was a teenager. Love that stuff.
