Did you ask them if it was as good as a tube amp?

Sounds like a group of elitist snobs. :(

I wonder what the forum rules look like:
1. No questions: either you know your shit or you don't.
2. Don't bug us if you don't!
3. RTGDMFM!
4. Bragging about how bitchin you are, or your axe fx is, is like, totally encouraged, dood.....
5. ABSOLUTELY NO GRATUITOUS THANK YOUS! You will be banned from the forum if you so much as even THINK about being nice to another member!

I'm going Helix, helpful forum and at least you can try before you buy.
The latest firmware includes a D style, apparently.

Also you can use a 2 amp patch, unlike AX8, same as AxeFxII.
Having said that, AX8 does sound good, if somewhat bewildering at the UI level.

If the AX8 goes tits up, where do you get it fixed? If you get Helix from Andertons you can go there and moan at Lee and Chappers :D

This is why I went back to tube amps. I used to use a Johnson Millennium as my main amp. Served me well for 10 years or so... then died. Since it is so chock-full of proprietary technology and Digitech abandoned the Johnson brand completely, I was suddenly without an amp with no money to replace it. Man was I bummed... I LOVED that amp and had to resort to my crappy Classic 30 (sorry just my opinion I know people like those a lot.)

The Helix scares me to death. All those LCD screens... SOO much to go wrong with it. Sure it may last a few years but will it be serviceable when you need it? By then Line 6 may have moved-on. And with everything being SMD now and no more through-hole circutry it puts them beyond the average DIY electronics geek's ability to even replace a simple cap or resistor.

Something goes wonky on my tube amp I replace a tube, solder in a new cap... or worst-case wire-up a replacement tranny from Hammond that I can get overnighted to me in an emergency.

My honest feeling is that if I get 3 or 4 good years out of such equipment, then I am happy and anything after that, ahead of the game. They are likely to become obsolete very quickly as tech marches on. Like you say, LCD screens on the floor, size 14 keyboarders and drummers tripping over them, beer... SOOOO much to go wrong.
Cf lovely hand made tube amps, likely to last half a lifetime if not more, simple to fix and service.
It's why we are here, but I always have liked to keep up with tech advances and the chance to backpack my sounds around is a worthwhile investment to me.

Yeah if you can approach it that way then it's all good. I just can't personally afford $1300 every three or four years, getting used to a new tone, etc.

I gave up trying to chase tech... got one kid in college and a second one starting in September...

Only way I can afford new gear is to sell something I have and buy used. Reverb.com has become my new best friend. 8)

Apparently the European dealers are excellent and offer a RTB 3 year warranty with all costs paid for by the distributor, not keen on line 6 products, last one I tried at PMT Birmingham sounded pretty crap in 4cm mode, although that was a few years ago
