As seen on TV Jones

Post by Reeltarded »

Anyone have experience with different models of TV Jones pickups?

My Dearmond Retsch started asking about Filtertrons. I think the first two levels of twang are hot enough, yet still unsure.

I have some experience with their different filtertron variants yes but have not tried the dearmonds (except for the magnatron).

Stock Filtertron with a little more face would be ok. I can'y tell what the difference is by the examples.

FWIW I put a TV Jones Classic in the neck of my thinline Tele. It butters my biscuit but I would not call it bold. More like luscious…. I am not a Gretsch guy so, dunno why I am chiming in. Quiet and well built.

I am not a Retsch guy on purpose, but Dearmonds are umm.. no longer useful. I'm never going to record again. I'll buy the pickups and come back with my take. hehe oh well.

Classics seem like AC/DC possible.

for a little more output and mids, consider TV Classic or for even more punch the Setzer signature. Finally, the TV classic plus is even fatter but looses some of the twang and punch on the bass strings (it still works great in a cabronita/tele style guitar).

For the neck pickup you don't need a overwound pickup really. the tv classic is nice

In the final stages of a build the the client asked for a Powertron Plus in bridge of a single-pickup guitar. Still spraying finish on it so I don't know what the pickup sounds like, but Reverend Billy was mentioned in the development of it, so.....

cheers,

cheers,
Billy uses the powertron plus, the standard powertron is more like PAF in terms of output (it is not overwound like the powertron plus is)

I clicked through the examples 3 more times. After a few minutes they all sound too similar. :)

I’ve got TV Classics in one build and Power’trons in another (both newer 5420s). The Classiscs are clear and fairly articulate, the Power’trons are definitely more PAF-ish but with a thinner edge more befitting of a Filtertron derivative.

I have a set of ‘68 Filtertrons in a an early ‘69 6120 that seems to land squarely between them as my reference point.

Classic = a little thiner and bell-like
Power = meatier and snarlier

I got a guitar with Super'Tron's. PU got high output, Thick low mids and a lot more high/twang than other humbucker gtrs I know. Lows are on the edge of fuzz/fart.

Like a lot of things, you're not really gonna know until you simply buy a pickup or two & try them out.

I've got a guitar with a TV Classic and a Supertron. The Supertron is a little thicker & a little hotter. They say that in their text, and in their "Pickup Tone Spectrum" even if the differences sound subtle in their clips.

Because the differences are pretty subtle unless you're going from one end of the range to the other. With you coming from DeArmonds, most models will be thicker, and the image does accurately show which are thicker & by how-much.

Everything else is PAFs so I really am looking for enough snot to move a Marshall and say, "That is what a Gretsch sounds like!". Too much snot will be too much!

I think I am playing it safe with classic plus. I think. Maybe. I love the Dearmonds but NOISIEST PICKUP EVER MADE.
