Weber tremolux chassis questions

Post by dragonbat13 »

I've been eyeing this chassis awhile

https://www.tedweber.com/5e7tch/

I am wondering about the transformer situation.

Does anybody know if this 5g9 chassis will accept 5g9 iron? Am I stuck with 5e7 iron?

Weber doesn't really indicate if the chassis would have to have cutouts modified, if they are 5g9, or if there no cutouts at all? Personally I would prefer nothing at all vs the wrong transformer cutouts. I've never used a Weber chassis before.

Anyone built on this particular chassis?

Are there any other 5g9 chassis out there?

The 5E7 is a 6L6 amp and the 5E9 is a 6V6 amp. I would expect the 5E7 power transformer to be larger. The Hammond replacement transformers agree. The 5E9 uses a 290BX with a bolt pattern of 2.25" x 2.831". The larger 5E7 uses the 290D2X with a bolt pattern of 2.75" x 3.438".

Contact Weber. They can tell you what the PT bolt pattern dimensions are.

DB,

I have this exact chassis, waiting in the wings for a Tremolux-type build. I say "Tremolux-type" because the circuit will be similar but with a few mods. Indeed the PT chassis cutout for the Weber chassis is for Bandmaster iron, so be advised. I selected a lower B+ Bandmaster PT, so the (tube) rectified voltage should be close to the 5G9A specified voltages. I opted for an oversized Deluxe Reverb A-frame OT (6k3 primary) so I can run 6L6GC, 5881, or 6V6 in cathode bias.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the clarification.

Colossal, who's PT did you decide to use. I like your ideas on that setup.

In all honesty, I kinda want to get a bit more power out of the amp anyway.

I think a pair of 5881's would be nice. Always liked that tube.

I used a set of Mercury transformers.
