100watt Bass Amp build - suggestions?

Post by pleasantbullet »

I'm looking to build a bass amp for my friend.

I have PT / OT transformers i pulled from a 100watt 4 - 6L6 tube PA.
(The output transformer is 2.4k primary)

My first thought was a Fender Bassman 100.
But is it really a good amp for Bass guitar?
Most people i see play it use it for guitar.

Would it need any mods to make it more suitable?

Any suggestions or recommendations for a different amp would be great.

or.. have you built anything with similar tubes / transformer?

How loud do you need to play, and do you play a 5 string and how many speakers will you be playing thru?
If you play with a hard hitting drummer in a 2 guitar band and they play thru 4-12 speaker cabs each than 100 watts of clean power played thru 4-10 or 2-15" speakers will cut it, but if you will play thru only 2-10s or just 1-15" you will be on the edge, also if you thump on a low B string you will need more than 100 watts of clean power and either that 4-10 or 2-15 cabinet!

Projection of Bass frequencys takes far greater power than for 6 string guitar, and playing thru 2 speakers compared to just 1 will near double the sound output level where as if you wanted to do such with wattage you would need near 10 times the wattage!!

My client and I had good luck with a low power tube amp (SE, one KT88 for about 25 watts clean) with a line-out tapped off the output (and a dummy load to silence the amp) and then for large gigs he runs the line-out into a 600watt solid state amp and a huge 8x10 cab. Rockin'.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

I'd like to understand the reasoning behind that statement.

If it were not for the need for a separate heater transformer, I'd say use a quad of 6550s and let 'em loaf. EL34s won't work either.

Doubling of the number of speakers you play thru will double the SPL level pretty much where as to get that same spl level increase with the output wattage of a amp you have have to for example step up to a 100 watt amp if you where previously playing thru a 10 watt amp!

Doubling the number of speakers is the same as doubling the amplifier power... you get 3dB SPL.

There is actual volume (dB) and perceived volume - how much are your ears hearing? I don't claim to know the answer, I just know adding an additional speaker doesn't make it twice as loud, but you get twice the coverage.
