Silverface Princeton Reverb, what are correct original speaker types?
What are correct original speaker types for a silverface Princeton Reverb?
I'm getting one that has no speaker.
I know, lots of aftermarket speaker choices are out there. That's fine, I'll probably end up with one.
But I want to know the correct original types, just for my information.

The best sounding Princeton Reverb amps, and Vibrolux Reverb amps also, had Jensen C10NS speakers.

Jensen loudspeakers closed its doors in very late 68 so only if you have an early Silverface amp would the original speaker be a Jensen.
After that Fender used some CTS brand drivers which where as good as the Jensen’s, but when they started to use Utah brand drivers they were not on par with the earlier two manufacturers.
To speed production they made the voice coil gaps wider and this made for a less efficient driver that does not connect to your fingers like a Jensen or CTS will.

I mean...there's still a Jensen speaker company...and whoever they are, they make great speakers:

Everything I have tried from Warehouse Guitar Speakers has been solid. I would suggest the G10C.

I first tried an Eminence 1258 then one of the Warehouse G12C/S speakers (12” Version of the G10C/S mentioned in the previous post) I have and man the volume level and tone just got significantly better! Love the tone of this speaker in this amp! I prefer clean tones and this speaker nails it!
Re: Silverface Princeton Reverb, what are correct original speaker types?
Since this post I tried an Eminence Cannabus Rex 12”. It was decent but the Warehouse G12C/S for me is some better and returned the C Rex. The C Rex highs were a little much and the lows on the G12C/S are a little better due to larger magnet. Notice: this is based on my like for nice cleans. I do not do overdriven tones so cannot speak for this.Gary A. wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 4:12 am I first tried an Eminence 1258 then one of the Warehouse G12C/S speakers (12” Version of the G10C/S mentioned in the previous post) I have and man the volume level and tone just got significantly better! So I now own the Princeton I was looking at, got it for a good deal because it's got issues.
I sorted out some of them but one is bugging me and I don't mind asking for a little help here.
Turn the treble control up, and the volume drops. At no point does it sound right. Bass is also affected, but it's not a volume issue, it's a tone issue there.
I can't find any leaky capacitors. Or any resistors that are out of spec by enough to matter.
I did find a bad treble pot and replaced it. That made the treble pot response more consistent, but didn't fix the problem.

This sounds like an ultrasonic oscillation is kicking in. Maybe you can see it on a scope?Matthews Guitars wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2024 11:34 pm Turn the treble control up, and the volume drops.

Re: Silverface Princeton Reverb, what are correct original speaker types?
I found it, it was the treble capacitor (250 pf disc) leaking very slightly. Got that taken care of, and then noticed that the amp is just low in output and heavily distorted. Checked the voltages, and they're low. Then I touched the power transformer and it was too hot to touch for more than a second. Unloaded it by pulling the power tubes, it made no difference. Voltages barely changed.
So...apparently it needs a power transformer.
That's OK, they're not that expensive.

Double-check that fuse value.

Did you try pulling the rectifier tube? I'd be wary of a faulty cap in the power supply (I know you said you checked them, but PTs aren't really a dime a dozen, so I'd personally want to check again).

The power supply reservoir cap (multisection) was replaced recently and is good. Double checked, the PT is definitely bad. Replacement is on order.
With a SS rectifier installed and no power tubes in the sockets, the PT gets too hot to handle in just about 2 or 3 minutes. Thermal cameras are SO much fun, and very useful!
All voltages in the amp are way low. No preamp plate voltage is over 85 volts.
