Looking for Re-Tweed -1959 Bassman w/Black Tolex

Post by Roaddogma »

I acquired a 1959 4x10 Bassman 25 years ago that had been updated with a black tolex theme, complete with tilt-back legs. I'm thinking that I would like to get it re-covered with an original looking tweed. Are there any recommendations for someone to restore the tweed on a vintage amp, in the U.S.?

Also, are there any opinions on how this might affect the value for a potential sale? I have my doubts about it being original, but it does look like factory work. It doesn't have original speakers, so it may not matter. My gut feeling is that most tweed buyers would prefer a tweed cover.

Mojo & https://guitarcabinetsdirect.com do damn near perfect repro tweed cabs.
I have purchased cabinets from both, and had cabinets recovered. They are OEM for pretty much everybody.
If the cabinet is original, I would have it recovered, if not, I would get a repro cabinet.

Thanks for the tip!

The cabinet in question is original, so not looking to replace it. Since my original posting, I have located an "RD" stamp on the inside of the chassis which would indicate that this amplifier was "updated" by Fender in 1965. This explains the Black Face make-over and the 1965 CTS speaker in the cabinet. Considering that this looks to be one of the factory R&D or similar amplifiers, I am inclined to leave the black Tolex, and replace the missing BF style Fender badge for the grill.

I think they're affiliated as they're on the same block....

Where is this RD stamp? Any pics of this amp?

Here is another shot showing the tilt back leg.

RD stamp.jpg
The stamp is inside the chassis, near the power transformer.

I was advised to look for the stamp by the owner of this amp. His has stamps on the chassis as well as on the tube chart.

I meant pics of the circuit itself.

That looks like a normal Fender QC mark to me. My 1964 Reverb tank.
