6v6 Plexi Speaker Choice

Post by steve_p »

So I am starting work on a 6v6 plexi, using heyboer 18W Iron.

I was looking to get some suggestions on speaker choice.
I would like to stick to a single 12" speaker.

My first thought was a Heritage G12H, but I am not sure how the 30W rating would hold up against this amp.

I definitely would like to get some speaker breakup as part of the tone of this amp.
Scumbacks might be a good option too, but not sure which model.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

I've got a 30 watt scumnico in a 17w amp, it's been fine cranked, sounds great.

The S75-PVC scumback might be cool to check out too, but it's 25 watts, I'd ask Scumback speakers if that's a conservative rating or not.

You'll want the 65w S75-PVC for that amp. The 25w S75-PVC would get smoked like a joint, IMO. All Scumbacks just went on sale this morning at $20 through January 6, 2014.

I can certainly vouch for the 65w S75-PVC version if you want to stick to just 1 12".....it is a great speaker...
First 25 years of playing, I never got along with EL84's...Now I think, WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH ME????

I'm sure that's a wonderful speaker, but if you (like me) can't afford that much, the Eminence Swamp Thang is my favorite 12" speaker for 18-20w 2xEL84 and 2x6v6 amps, especially if in an oversized ported 1x12 cab, like the one that AX84 provides free plans to build yourself:

For lightweight open-back 1x12 combos, I've been using the Eminence Lil' Texas speaker. Not quite as full-sounding, but you can design around that, and they're very lightweight for easy carrying.

I really like my 6v6 plexi best with tone tubby alnico/ceramic 2x12 mix.
