I got mostly the 1w but no problem on the .5w.

I replaced most of the signal resistors up to the PI on a 4 stage amp and it was obvious from the first note that the note separation is way better.

It didn't make the amp more forgiving. You have to mind your mutes a bit more. It could have more gain and still be happy too.

I am still missing a few values to complete a Rocketesqueish amp. I think these are great for that too. They aren't cloudy.
Great summary. I think words like 'sterility' get bandied about regarding metal films when the sonic result is a wake up call that one probably needs to spend more time practicing. I'll posit that the perceived added clarity is the cumulative effect of lower Johnson noise (heheh....Johnson) using good MFs in critical locations such as grid leaks and plate loads.

That sound might not be for everyone but for gain freaks, I love the added separation.
The web is all over the place on this stuff as it depends so much on how you use modern parts and the experience of the builders. My experience is w/ 2 tweed clones and an AC10 clone years ago as a total knube and doing whole amps with mfs or cfs and then MIT or Kimber caps and Hammond 1600 OTs and an Audio Note - I thought I was a genius. Summed altogether the results were terrible in all three amps I did, piercing clarity and very skewed tonal balance. I hung up my soldering iron for years. Eventually gutted and rebuilt all three, and all sing now. Used judiciously or in a new design or by experienced builders I'm sure there are rewards. Messing around on a TR or Dumble with various mfs or cfs, or even on Marshalls, all which originally had cfs won't prove so drastic i think, hence the good reports. Tweed Deluxe? Yuck. And also, that extra clarity has a price, maybe why people roll tubes like crazy on TW's trying to get them voiced right. Not so many rolling discussions from amps with all cc's and polyester caps.

After hanging out here I'm hesitantly getting up the courage to start playing around again with fancy parts - used judiciously, if just to find out if I've developed a modicum of judgment. I say hesitantly because when an amp comes out sterile is it ever a bummer! Enough to make you hang up your soldering iron.

Excellent point really. I don't think a 60' or 61' Twin would be better with no idle his and the brick wall you'd be playing against with stiff power and MFs.

Clean warmth looks like rolled off highs with quantum foam all around it. heh

+1000 on the marstran transformers. I used his Radiospares clone and it was the best cleans I have ever gotten. I wired the multiple primaries to the voltage and impedance switches so I could experiment the effect of using different primaries with different tubes. I tried the 6k6,8k, and 9k with 5881, el34, and 6L6. It was surprising to me how subtle the change in tone was between them. If I had to choose a favorite it was the 6k6 primary with SED 6L6. Mustards are actually worth the hype and sound better to me than the sozos. Wish I still had this build but in a fit of wanting to build another I sold it north of the border.

So are these takman 1w cf really worth $1.60 each? I am planning a 2204 and don't have a full set of pihers. There's about 4 resistors I need so I don't mind the price if its worth it.

You only live once, or twice.

They are very clear. The amp is more unforgiving than it was with big old CCs but less hiss too. It feels good to lnow it's half pink on the inside.

Most will be piher 1/2w...I have a couple .1 mustards, I can't remember if I ordered 150's or mojo caps. PPIMV, in an express chassis. I got some can caps and some EH 34's.

Ooh and I got kiwame 2w metal films for droppers and 1w for bias.

I hope 2W is enough...they are flame proof...I thought they would be cool

Build thread to start next week, this should go together pretty quick.

I want to do a passive loop before the PI. I'm gonna just do 1 input

Cool! Next time I buy all new stuff to build something it's gonna be a Rocket with REX REY and Kiwames. That will be my first all noo goo amp!

Try that loop just before the master, depending on what you run in it it works better. At least test it out with your effects. Sometimes even the best buffered stuff gets wonky with volume changes.

MORE GAIN! MORE! make it ugly!! :)

I just want some reverb to cover up my sloppy playing....and the gain...oh the gain.

I have those low voltage jcm800 trannies you helped me snag off the metro board last summer. Finally they will breathe fire again, muhaha!
