JTM45 KT66's - too close?

Post by duriehill »

Hi all

I made a JTM45 a year ago as my first amp build and it occured to me the other day when looking at pictures of the amp that perhaps the KT66's are too close to each other - perhaps damaging the tubes?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

GEC states that there should be 3.5 inches between centres. Just measure and see where you sit.

I'm working on a KT66 amp now and put mine 4 inch on center.
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Thanks

I might look at fixing a small aluminium sheet/plate to cover the kt66 footprint, say 2-3mm depth, to help space them with approx 4" centres.

What do you think? Or maybe no necessary?

Are you experiencing any issues/unusual behavior in the current configuration?

No, I'm not actually, just concerned really that their close proximity could shorten their life.

There doesn't appear to be any physical evidence behind this though.

Exactly why I'm very careful about buying Marshall chassis.

Mojotone JTM45 is for EL34's not KT66 unless you buy the new bass kit.

Triode JTM 45 is KT66 based and wider spacing. They also have JTM 50 (EL34) version too.

Metro or Valve Storm note there stuff very well and are geared for more accurate clones.

I like Modulus because he puts 4 power tube holes in his chassis and no PT cutout. You can built 100w or 50w, use the extra holes for can caps, etc. And the chassis can be used for JTM45, JCM, or Plexi.

Thanks Mark. Yeah, I didn't realise when I first started this amp (my first build).

I bought this:

I'm wondering which road I should head down in a resolution because it will probably bug me. I could just replace the chassis or attempt some patch work!?

Oh yeah forgot about Steve his looks a lot like the Modulus. They are both in EU so I guess that's why they are similiar. :)

Can you guys think of a nifty way to increase the spacing between the KT66's?

I would just leave the amp alone since it works well.
