EL 34 TO 6V6 CONVERSION

I'm sure its been discussed already(maybe someone can forward the thread) to convert a 2xEL34 Marshall to use 6v6's. I know there are no socket changes, and bias will have to change...other changes(besides tone)?

Do you mean 6L6 or 6V6?
For 6V6 the main problem will be maximum plate voltage.

I have operated 6v6's up to 420v, but most new tubes can't handle it for long Except maybe the quasi 6v6 jj. It does depend on the impedance load a bit. If you are much over 400v I'd consider the 5881 or 6l6. The 6l6wgb is a 5881, lower power than the 6l6gc. Pretty sweet sounding.

You'd have to redesign the power supply dropping string to supply proper voltages to pre, PI, and PA nodes. That might require a PT and OT swap as a practical necessity. Or maybe not, hard to say without comparing circuits and knowing capacities of existing iron.

What is a quasi JJ 6V6? And why is that it's not such a big issue for wrecks to go from EL34's to 6V6's?

I have a JMP50 clone that I can swap in 6V6s or EL34s. I did not have to rewire the bias circuit - the each bias fairly close - no more effort than swapping say Chinese EL34s for JJ E34Ls.

You should up the OT impedance like suggested. Mine - I have to re-wire it when I do this. I should have put in an impedance switch. Frankly, I just leave the E34Ls in there now and only crank it when the wife is out.

I did not notice a significant difference in preamp voltages when switching between the two. Sure the power tube plates are a little higher with the 6V6S - maybe another 10 volts.
