New dual EF86 project

Post by randalp3000 »

Pulled out my old Stangray a couple weeks ago and man did it sound killer. The cleans on this amp are stellar and thought an added brilliant channel to AB between would be awesome.

So this is the next project, the Ranray. Going with an Allen chassis, Hammond 300-0-300 230mA power trans, Hammond Vintage AC30 OP, and Hammond 10H 125mA choke. Also trying filtering on the preamp board with different grounding scheme(I swear I'm not copying you Mark). Also doing a PPIMV for the first time so it's easier to adjust volume for both channels.

This is day 1, chassis prep, layout, and boards, 2 hours. Didn't know the chassis had to be drilled for transformers and such and I'm trying to keep track of my time.

I left some values out of the schematic out of respect for the doc and some things I changed. Mostly it AC30 stuff.

Sounds cool, dude. I bought an old Mazda made Bugle Boy EF86 on Fleabay a while back and yesterday got the urge to wire it into V1 in a Watkins Dominator style amp I didn't really like all that much anymore and today when I pulled it out, it cracked, but I didn't know it when I pulled it and I set up the amp to play and nothing. I then observed it and saw a hairline crack through the middle of the pins and a short way up the side.

Luckily, it was just a used one and not expensive at all. Still, quite the bummer today. I'd only played that thing once. Poor little Bugle Boy!

Over the next few seasons less people build amps and Mark becomes a very dark character. I like it.

Mark's blue stuff is Classic Coke and the rest of us use some generic off brand crap.

2 more hours down, lots of progress. I hate wiring filaments but discovered half way through that tinning the leads makes it much easier.
I've got power, 309-0-309 with no load.

Nice build, but kind of redundant eh? You could easily switch-in both kinds of eq/volume control for each using a single EF86 and dropping the mixing 220ks.
Maybe I'm just a bit more frugal w/ my EF86s'...
