5E3 Big (6l6's)
Hi All ,i'm thinking of having a crack at building a 5e3 big with the x2 6l6's using Ceriatones diagram...Not had much experience at all and only built a couple kits which went well ,but wanna have a crack at something different from scratch .
I,m gonna take it slow & start with turret board.
Firstly in the diagram it uses 3 16uf 450v caps...Should i up all these to 22's or keep at 16's.
Anyone have any experience with building one of these and have any other suggestions or things to look out for when using this diagram ?
Regards

Another take: http://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits_50a.htm
See 5E3 Proluxe. Filters are 3x 40uF.

thanks martin, so why the 16' on this diagram, is that what originally would have been used years back ?
Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
It's not a historic model, but a kit-bashed high-powered 5E3 with larger Tweed Pro power and output transformers and GZ34 (or SS cooper cap in the Weber).
Ceriatone is using the original 5E3 filter cap values and cathode bias; Weber using heavier filtering and fixed bias to tighten things up. It's really your choice as to what to use.
Personally, I prefer the Double Deluxe/5E3x2 arrangement for more output while retaining more of the original 5E3 character, but then I like the original Tweed Deluxe character and lots don't.
How familiar are you to 5E3's? Played a few? Anything you do or don't like about them? These are the questions you want to ask yourself when deciing on the layout.

Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
Yes the original used 3x 16uF. If you don't change the B+ or load impedance then you wouldn't need to increase the size of the filters. The weber circuit shows an OT with a 4k primary, so it will need a bigger power supply.showbander wrote:thanks martin, so why the 16' on this diagram, is that what originally would have been used years back ?

Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
I have a amp based on the 5e3 and sounds fantastic. I could do with a tad more volume and later break up and really just wanna try a different amp to be honest. I'm after a nice winter project
Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
I've built a bunch of those from ceriatone layout, 32 32 22 for filtering seems about right with 425 on 6l6 plates. great sounding amp with none of the 6v6 5e3 mush lots of clean head room and excellent cranked tone. mark

Thanks fellas, yeh i think i will give this one a bash !
I will let you all know how i get on & when i start the build.
Did you make any drastic changes from the ceriatone diagram Mark ?

Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
One more quickie please fellas . Would this OT be sufficient ?
This power transformer was specified for the PP-36 amp kit, but would suit other amplifiers requiring 340V or so on the power valve plates. With a 275-0-275V 200mA high voltage winding, There's a 5V rectifier winding for GZ34/etc and plenty of heater current (6A) to supply sophisticated multi-valve preamp circuits....
This tranny is From Barry @ Ampmaker uk.
Thanks for the input everyone !

You need higher voltages than that for a 6V6 5E3 ...showbander wrote:One more quickie please fellas . Would this OT be sufficient ?

Hi mate ,this will be for the 5e3 Proluxe...With 6l6's !
Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
That just makes it worse.showbander wrote:Hi mate ,this will be for the 5e3 Proluxe...With 6l6's !
You want more like the 340-0-340.
You want the secondary closer to 425VDC, not 340VDC.

Re: 5E3 Big (6l6's)
Cheers all...i have decided i'm gonna build me a 5e3 as the parts are abit easier to source here in the uk...i will keep you all updated when i start the build. thanks again
