By the way, I've now played "Wrong side of the Road" 1462 times. Most bass players don't think like that you know? Kinda tropical, salsa, beat with guitar from outer space. I gotta tell you it's changed me and I don't know what to do.....I been runnin' around lookin' for fat girls to dance with. Gotta 'nother disk in the works? Oh, and both the strat and the LP featured in that cut right?geetarpicker wrote:One other angle on this. Though the Express circuit is basically a 35 watt amp or so, the output transformer in the Ceriatone version is pretty stout. More like 50 watt Marshall iron. I've been playing Glen's CD at least 3 times a day. Great stuff Glen! My favs are "Wrong side..." and "Sundown" which is way too shortskyboltone wrote:By the way, I've now played "Wrong side of the Road" 1462 times. Most bass players don't think like that you know? When I'm not spinning Glen's disc, I'm spinning my advance copy of Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand. Yeah, you heard me right. Good stuff.

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
I recently picked up some of the Celestion clones, Vintage 30 & Classic Lead from Warehousespeakers when they were selling them for $20 each on eBay. How could anyone resist? My deal was even sweeter since I ordered one of each and they sent me 2 of the same. They corrected the mistake and told me to keep the extra one at no charge. There service is excellent. I have no affliation with them, just a satisfied customer.
Now they going for $45 which still isn't too bad. They are planning to do a Greenback clone:

I have no idea how these sound with an Express. I just thought I'd throw this out thereWhere are the green clones? -- They are not ready. We're having an issue getting the edge treatment just right. I have chosen to delay shipping rather than send out speakers that could be better. The expected price on these is $45/ea.

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
FWIW, I use two 30W Scumback H75s in a 2x12 (semi-open back) and they have done fine but I don't fully crank the amp that often (amp has power scaling). But they have had my Express clone (using Heyboer Express iron...5k2 primary on the OT) cranked full-up into them and did fine. Have no idea if they could take it for long periods though. I really like the tone of these speakers too.
Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
Thanks for all the replies guys!
I contacted Nik from Ceriatone and he told that 60 watts of total speaker wattage handling should be fine even when crancked.
My wreck has half/full power and I pretty sure that 90% of the time I ll using half the power. When I need more pwer I will propably be needing a second 2x12 cab anyways...
I am leaning towards the scumbag speakers. A set of H55 and H75.

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
Ive been living dangerously with 1x12 Alnico Gold Celestion in an open back cab - but then I use an attenuator and its never cranked all the way to 12 but frankly you can't beat the tone.
I'm going to do the same thing with my new Liverpool.....

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
I really wanted someone to drop in and say that he tried the red fang or the gold alnico and it works.
For some reason I really want to try an alnico speaker on this amp...

my 5k2 ceriatone is ca 26watts clean. probably about 40w distortedskyboltone wrote:By the way, I've now played "Wrong side of the Road" 1462 times. Most bass players don't think like that you know? Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
FYI - I'm ordering anothe Gold Alnico for my 2x12 cab which is going to become another 1x12 OB cab - cept it won't be maple like the other one....
Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
I just tried my Express through my Vox cab loaded with a pair of golds. I believe it sounded great but I wasn't wearing earplugs and it got a bit hazy after a couple of minutes. Damn, those golds are sensitive!fingerace wrote:I really wanted someone to drop in and say that he tried the red fang or the gold alnico and it works.

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
NOt sure what you mean by hazy.... to me, mine is in an open back cab and I A/B-ed it to my 2x12 Fender open back cab which has a celestion greenback and one vintage 30 both UK made, the winner was the alnico.
It has a more rounded tone to me - more bass response and sizzle on the high ends with just the right amount of mids. The perfect speaker I think for the sound I want which is punchy and bright but not overwhelming.
The other two speakers have more high end and tended to be harsh compared to the Alnico. I remember when I first put the green and the vinatge in - I thought it was the end of the line - then along comes the gold.....

Hazy in that I was going deaf at the time!
I'm loving the golds generally in the open back cab and I've heard fantastic reports of them in a 4x12 as well (that'll make for one seriously expensive cab). I'll give them a proper run through with the Express when I get a chance as it was the first time I'd tried them with it and I was overwhelmed by how outrageously loud they were compared to my more usual greenbacks.

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?
:)I have still my Gold in box waiting for installation. I have used Red Fangs until now and now I want to test if Gold is really my speaker for the future. At the moment I have a 2x12" semi open cab with two Red Fangs which are by the way very good quality compared to their price at least here in Finland. Maybe future combination could be one Red Fang with one Gold in same cab. My Express project is also proceeding well and in the best case I can test it in real live by the middle of October. Regards Harry

The M75 is like a G12M Greenback and the H75 is like a G12H...plus he makes some other variations. Contact him and he'll help you choose the right speaker (he'll ask all the right questions to help you get the right speaker).
