how do EVM12Ls sound in a Marshall style 1960 cabinet?
are the EVs too heavy for the baffle

Both Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler used two EV12-Ls in Marshall 1960A cabinets in the late 80's/early 90's. I believe they ran them closed back with two holes open. There should be ample videos on youtube from that era.

Never heard about that, are you sure?
Sounds gross to me, they would at least have covered the empty holes.
Using an open back cab is something and has merit on its own but closed back and 2 empty 12" holes is horrible.

I think the 'detuned' idea is presented in KOC's speaker design book.
Some info about it seems to have gone from his site, but this page puts it in a nutshell http://www.syer.net/detuned_cab.htm
I remember that one of my buddies inadvertently did this to his 4x12 decades ago, when he used it with a couple of the speakers removed; I expected it to sound bad but the opposite was true.

No, however, I know that he ran the Music Man cabs with JBLs and open backs in the 70's and 80's. One way or the other, something was open. It makes sense to me to port to the front.JMFahey wrote:Never heard about that, are you sure.

Sorry, not to me.
In an open back cabinet out of phase backwave must travel from speaker edge to one side, then to the back, then same distance along the external side until it meets destructively the front wave.
2 to 3 feet.
While an empty large hole (with that size I wouldn't call it a "port" any more) allows back/front shorting only 2 to 4 *inches* away

Four of them in one box sounds like a trip to the chiropractor.zoolion wrote:EVM 12L's weigh 19lbs each! If your only using two, I guess it all evens out but I had a Marshall 2x12 that I loved the sound of with EV's. I had two 1x12's made so that i could lift the buggers.

You could check Gary Moore with his legendary tone he menaged to pull from his Marshall JTM45 Reissue, first used on Still Got the Blues album with Marshall 1960B 4 x12″ cabinets fitted with Electrovoice 12M speakers instead of the usual Celestions

Oh, and Joe Bonamassa uses them too in oversized split cabinets

And don't forget Zakk Wylde.
He only uses EV's in his 4x12's. And his are even heavier than the normal type of EV's.
