Hi.
I'm in the process of building a 2x6L6 "Blackface"-style amp and I have an old recycled choke on hand that I plan to use.
I loaned a LCR-meter from my friend to check the inductance and it reads about 15 Henrys and dcr is 159 ohms.
That's about 4-5 times more inductance that Fender used.
How will that choke behave? Feel more "stiff"?
I'm going with ss-rect (no 5V tap in my PT) and a bit larger filtering for b+ as I'm aiming for big clean tone.
Has anyone used bigger chokes in Fender builds?

Bear in mind that inductance may change with current (ac and dc), and collapse when the saturation current is exceeded.
Have you tried measuring the inductance of chokes whose spec you know?

Hi!
I measured few chokes of different Henry-scale (uH - H) whose specs I know and it most likely looks like that the meter (Wavetek Meterman LCR55) is calibrated right.
So if (and most probably) it's a 15H choke, what would be the benefits and "negative" sides of using one in the PS of a that kind of amp?

it will sound crisper and cleaner with tighter bass but slightly more screen sag. I generallt prefer 3-4h for fenders and marshalls

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll pass that choke and get a new one better suitable for this project.

Fender choke resistance typically seems to be 100-120 ohms, for the larger amps, 150-200 ohms for the smaller amps (inc the Vibrolux). So at 159 ohms, the resistance of the choke here seem in the normal range for Fenders? So the sag character shouldn't be affected?

its a little more more than 100ohms but the effect might be sublte.pdf64 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 08, 2020 12:32 pmFender choke resistance typically seems to be 100-120 ohms, for the larger amps, 150-200 ohms for the smaller amps (inc the Vibrolux).
