Hi all, I think I spotted another mistake, this time from the Jap schematic which has been replicated to the final project. On the low filter there is no 0.01uF. The first position is 5100pF, then 2400pF, then 0.001uF (orange drop), then 1000pF (mica). I think the Jap guy miswrote it. This is in line with the other SSS amps, and it would make sense as far as the position in which the orange drop is as far as the filter.
Because 0.001uF is orange drop and 1000pF is mica they will be sonically very different regardless of the value being similar....

Rafael, I dont think so, take a look at youtube Dumbleland vid were they go through the filter settings, very similar behavior to what it is now.

Makes sense to me. The sonic difference is interesting and I know you did your own tests using your ears and found them strikingly different. Looking at the size of the orange drop cap, i think it is indeed 1000pf. But this does not mean an error in the Japanse schematic. It only means that the assumption that the 10nF is the orange drop was wrong. For another point of reference, the Ceriatone/sterling sig tops out at 5400pf. I guess it's not too crazy of an idea the 1000mica/1000 6ps?

I don't know the complete ceriatone schematic, but the input network to the filterswitches could be different.
It is strange that Nik claims he had acces to a real SSS but still wired the filterswitches in reverse on his own amp. So i don't consider his amps to be correct, but more like his own (or someone he borrowed it from) take on the sss.
I use my amp frequently with my band and it sounds like nothing else, realy realy awesome sound! Although the filter input caps might be in series, i don't realy want to change anything at this point. I did make a 'mistake' though on the highfilter. I read the values of the japanese schematic and by mistake read 2700 instead of 2400pf. The 4 looked like a 7 to me. Only later i discovered it should be 2400pf. A lucky mistake because the 2700pf cap i use the most on my overdrive sounds.

Ceriatone is based on #004 (although there are differences). But, it has the same filter network. This network only changed from #005 onwards. Ok, so the Ceriatone uses the same 0.01 \ 0.001 input caps to the switches. #004 has .01uF coupling cap. The 0.001uF is removed and jumpered with a barewire, but its the same topology. Seems like there was a lot of experimentation going on with the filters.
Do any of you use the treble switch position with the isolated 3n (2n in C-tone layout above)? If so, for what purpose?

Never. Only use case I can think of is for laying a isolated reverb track in the studio?

To me this would be a significant difference. I think using the higher value cap settings on the 004 without the 0.001 series cap would result in a more mid heavy sound on those settings.Bombacaototal wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 9:56 am

The 3nF could be some dark jazz tone setting, instead of turing the tonepot on the guitar down. But that's stretching it.
Using both the 3nf and the 0.001 bypass cap does give a very heavy midhump sound
