Unconventional chassis
What if any would be the drawbacks of using an 18watt style (not same dimensions, I just mean channel with no sides) chassis for a dumble build? I've started collecting parts for my first build and I need to get going on the chassis. The reason I as is I can get aluminum in 0.1 or 0.125 really cheap and an old friend is willing to bend it for me for free, so I would just need to do some drilling. Hopefully one day I will have the money for something like what funk has to offer, but I'd like to first get somewhat of a handle on getting the innards right first.
The only potential problem I see is that you can't mount anything on sides that don't exist.
Would I have to put foil or something over the sides, then? Or find a plate that fits?
My other option would be to bend it with sides and just not spot-weld them or anything. Could that work?

Re: Unconventional chassis
the biggest drawback is structural integrity. You could have some problems when you get a couple big trannies bolted on with the whole thing just folding up.
Re: Unconventional chassis
I have a Dumble style amp I built that way. It's fine as long as you handle it with care. I shipped it once and it arrived with a bent chassis so I had to take it apart and bend it back.
Re: Unconventional chassis
You could shore up the sides with some hard wood like birch, maple, etc. although it will eat up a bit of volume in the chassis. You can buy sticky back shielding from guitar supply places (check Stewart-McDonald) but you probably don't need it especially if you shield the wiring like HAD did.
Re: Unconventional chassis
Bob-I what thickness did you use? I can get anywhere from .09 up to .125. This is a 100watter by the way.
Also, is the structural integrity thing a big deal if i make it with sides but don't spot weld them?

If you are using .1 or .125 you should be fine without welding

My curiosity is piqued as well.

looks like a 45...Sweet chassis
Re: Unconventional chassis
It's just channel with an end cap, yeah? That looks like it would be perfect for the way I'm doing things. How's it work?
Re: Unconventional chassis
Billet end caps for a GDS head chassis I built into a 18 watt TMB. I just didn't feel comfortable with the open ended chassis and loved the old block ends that Marshall used to use. I have no way of mass producing them so cost is really prohibitive sorry.

Re: Unconventional chassis
Do you mean mass producing the billet ends or the whole chassis?
Re: Unconventional chassis
No just the end caps. They were custom made to fit the GDS chassis. I could make one offs if someone sent me a chassis but they won't be cheap. I can make a one off chassis but I am not gear up for it so they would cost more then you can get elsewhere. Didn't I see a link here to a company that makes one off chassis's for like $40 ?
