Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
Hi everyone, I’m gearing up to build a Dumble 183 clone, and I called Chris Merren but he seems to be phasing out. I found amp parts direct and they seem to only offer a heyboer project 100watt out transformer with 2.2k primary resistance. I’m just wondering if anyone has used this transformer? How does it sound and feel when playing?
Also if anyone has a transformer that fits the bill and they be willing to sell, I’d be interested! Thank you

Hammond 1760CGPW, replacement for Marshall TSL100 has 2k2 primary and 4, 8, 16 secondaries. https://www.hammfg.com/electronics/tran ... eferer=790
They are not providing a data sheet, though.
I'm sure the Heyboer is a fine OT given their reputation.

Have you looked at Mojotone's output transformers? They're reportedly made by Heyboer. I've used them in my builds and like them. I used the 100w Fender type with 2.0k primary with 4x6L6 power tubes. They also have a 100w 1.8k Marshall type transformer for 4xEL34 tubes.
For my #183 build I used Edcor Iron. Very heavy!
Most likely I will use the transformer you're asking about in my upcoming Bluesmaster Build with 4x6L6 but cannot comment on it yet. In fact I believe I will order one soon...

Might be worth asking Heyboer if they have a replacement for TSL100 OT.

Amp Parts Direct part # APD-8026H 1.7K is what you want for #183 100 watt
I built a 100 watt #183 it was to loud for stage use I did use a Dagnell C1998 from a 1968 Super Lead 100
had to use a Dumblator next I built 3 50 watt versions using Dagnell 784-139 OPT no Dumbleator required

Oh, and another thing, this on Power transformers. If you are going to use the Fender type pay attention to the output voltages. Both Mojotone and AmpPartsDirect offer these but Mojotone's are rated 20volts higher. I can verify this is true because I have both, I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why one amp's voltage was lower when I had two seemingly identical PTs until I noticed the different voltages on the spec sheets.

I found 470 volts B+1 under load worked well on all 4 of my #183 builds
found the filter supply to stiff 330uf 47uf went with 220uf 33uf

Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
Back in the day when this amp was first drawn up a dude named jborders got the group order for the #183 going with Heyboer.
I haven't dug out the spec sheet but Heyboer can tell you the details. If memory serves it had the higher voltages for the EL-34s and taps for the relay.
As for the output transfomer I used a 100watt Marshall Dagnal I believe, sounds great
I haven't been around for a while, nice to see some familiar names!

Good to see you Eric
I used Jon's ( jborders ) spec power transformer on the first #183 build also

Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
I have a 1202-132 (2.2k) OT that I used for my 183 build. I ordered it from Marstran or Metroamp but if I’m not mistaking metroamp is not longer selling transformers but they are listed on the Marstran site as a special order. The amp sounds great!

Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
That’s interesting because I’ve been contemplating doing a 50watt version, my 124 is loud but sounds incredible, I thought about the half power switch but I’m thinking I might commit to the 50watt version. Is there Heyboers you like for the 50 watt version?67plexi wrote: ↑Wed Apr 30, 2025 1:13 pm Amp Parts Direct part # APD-8026H 1.7K is what you want for #183 100 watt

On the 50 watt version I used Drake 789-139 OPT and 1202-118 power transformer

Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
Your PT and OT have their magnetic axes in parallel.
This favors magnetic coupling and may cause induced 60Hz hum (even without power tubes inserted).
I'd consider rotating the OT by 90°.

Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
Hey helmholtz how does the orientation cause coupling in the photos above, I'm very curious to learn. In diagrams I've seen they show the PT laying down and the OT up with bells towards/away the PT as the most ideal way to orient transformers, is there something I am not seeing that you could teach me about?
Re: Dumble 183 output transformer 2.2k
For least coupling the magnetic axes of the PT and the OT should be at right angles.
The magnetic axis is defined by the coil. As the coil winds around the center leg of the core, you want the center legs of the transformers to be at right angles for least coupling.
So you need to guess or know the orientations of the core center legs (or the coils).
