The material is just resting on the wood baffle. It is just wrapped around and stapled on all sides.xtian wrote:I dovetailed and glued up my cabinet.
Wondering about the baffle, specifically the material, like Fender silver fabric, on the front of the baffle. Is the material just resting against the surface of the baffle? Or do you build a frame to suspend it?
I ask because I had an old Sano once where the material on the cabinet was actually rattling. The glue had dried out.

Fender did it both ways depending on the year: earlier blackfaces had the grille cloth right on the baffle; '68-'69 or so, most models had a thin frame around the edge of the baffle to hold the cloth away.mhartman wrote:The material is just resting on the wood baffle. This was my first time cutting the three-degree angle on the front of a combo, Fender style. I have a cheap Harbor Freight angle tool for the table saw. Worked great! Nothing like seeing five or six inches of unprotected table saw blade spinning away. Came away with all my digits, tho.
I can tell by the smell this cab is going to sound good.

That looks really nice Aaron, great job. Bet it smells good too!
Re: Monkeymatic Shasta Princeton Reverb pine combo
If you want a nice smelling cab try Cedar.
Of course you don't want to go and hide the aroma by covering it with nitro or worse Tolex.
Problem is getting boards wide enough to fit anything but the smallest chassis.
Someone want to make me a Cedar cab ?
(I don't do woodwork ...)

Re: Monkeymatic Shasta Princeton Reverb pine combo
You'd think this would be easy to Google: how large a hole for a 12" speaker? In the baffle, I mean.

JD Newell 1x12 combo - 10.5"xtian wrote:I'm finding 11.125" dia. Sound right?
MusicMan 1x12 combo - 10.75"
1980 Deluxe Reverb - 10 5/8"
Inside diameter of the gasket on several different 12" Fender speakers - 11"
It doesn't seem too consistent (or critical), just match it to your speaker's gasket I.D.
edit: EV SRO12 - 11", EVM12 - 10 7/8"

It's so good to go build something with my hands, instead of pushing pixels. My mood has improved. Thanks y'all for the encouragement!
Thanks, Bob! Settled on 11.125, and it ended up fitting the Celestion Blue perfectly.
The T-bolts are nice, but I'll have to countersink them so they don't show thru the grille cloth.

Re: Monkeymatic Shasta Princeton Reverb pine combo
Looks great don't forget to paint inside panels and speaker baffle flat black before tolexing. Or at least paint the baffle board flat black.
Re: Monkeymatic Shasta Princeton Reverb pine combo
Thx Mark. This cab is staying blonde. Gun oil finish, wheat grille and cream knobs. It's super smooth from lots of sanding.

The cabinet will look great with an oil finish but if you don't paint the front of the speaker baffle black the speaker cone will show through the grill cloth. Probably not the look you are after.xtian wrote:Thx Mark. This cab is staying blonde. Gun oil finish, wheat grille and cream knobs. It's super smooth from lots of sanding.
