Compressor? Yea or Nay?

I've tried a bunch and landed on the Carl Martin unit. Very adjustable. Don't use it when I'm really emphasizing pick dynamics since they tend to get lost in the compression sauce. Cleans up a drunk right hand when you are into your third set though.

I pulled mine out yesterday it's a DOD 290 used it periodically throughout the years mostly for country music.

That's an interesting approach. I never thought to use a comp with the level down to keep the signal under the OD threshold. And then shut it off to unleash the signal into distortion land. I'll have to try that.Cliff Schecht wrote:On my Express I really like a squishy compressor although I use it for the opposite of what you're doing. I set the amp up normally and use the compressor to cut enough volume to clean up the amp completely. When I click it on I can hit the strings as hard as I want and not even get hair if I have things set right.

I still use the red DOD FX-80 comp I found in a gtr. case pocket deal 20 yrs. ago. What a p.o.s. too. I've had to resolder more dang connex in this thing, but I like how it retains the highs [unlike my DynaComp experiences].M Fowler wrote:I pulled mine out yesterday it's a DOD 290 used it periodically throughout the years mostly for country music.

I use it the other way: as a lead boost, w/ the vol. knob up, then hit the button for 'more'.
btw, not only Lowell, but I think I detect comps on Lindley, Landreth, Cooder [check out 'Memo From Turner']
