Don't mean to sidetrack your post, but does a 30% have a 'faster' taper.pazzo63 wrote:PLEASE does anybody knows where is possible to buy Alpha pots 30% taper (NOT 15%), a European place would be the ideal in order to save on import duties, but also overseas would be great THANKS IN ADVANCE pazzo
IME an alpha 500kB (log) pot shows 250k at noon (halfway) - is this a 30% taper? (If so, you can get these at tubetown.de, musikding.de and uk-electronic.de)

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
found the following ol' ampgarage link that explains it all:
http://archive.ampage.org/threads/1/open/012058
/Re_The_real_CTS_1meg_30_taper_pots-1.html
"...for a 30% taper, when you turn the pot half way, you would read 333 ohms... "
Hence, the 500KB pot measuring 250K at '5' must be a 50% taper.

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
500KB is linear, 500KA is log (audio).
That's why you're seeing 250K at the midpoint, because it isn't an audio taper pot at all.
As far as I know no-one is selling 30% taper pots off the shelf these days. Brandon from Bludotone had them custom made for him in that taper, but had to place a huge order to get them and I don't believe intends to sell any.

These used to be standard fifty years ago but somewhere along the line they changed to 15% I believe. The only way to get 30% taper now is to special order and you have to need something like 10,000 or so!

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
The 30% Alphas are a special order item. Miimum order quantities are 1000 pieces of one value.
I order mine directly from Taiwan. Lead times usually run 4 to 5 weeks.
Drop out rate (outside of my spec +/- 5%) is about 10 to 12 percent.

Here's the reason for the confusion:paulster wrote:500KB is linear, 500KA is log (audio).

US and EU standards have opposite nomenclature.

That sucks, I can't believe that is not a world wide standard.

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
sometimes you can get lucking on ebay or nos at supply houses. try searching for allen bradley
keep in mind pots can be built / rebuilt so if you find the taper and % you need but the shaft is to long or short you take it a part and put it in a pot you can use. use common sense as far as size and brand.
I was able to make the correct TW style pots using 3 pots that each had a part I needed. One had the correct taper and long wiring lugs. One had the correct back panel. the last one had the correct shaft. It wasn't cheap but it worked. ~ $50 each after shipping for a single pot.

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
REALLY THANKS FOE THE HELP TO EVERYBODY, i think i m going to use cts 30% taper i think they are called no load pot or something like that .Any informations about them would be appreciate THANKS AGAIN BEST WISHES pazzo
Re: alpha 30% taper pots
I think all commonly available CTS log pots are 10% taper. There is a wirewound pot (026 series) that offers 20%, but will likely cost the earth.
Be careful with "no load" pots. Nothing special about these except the carbon track is cut/disconnected/not deposited at one end, so at full rotation, the pot is out of circuit. They'll work in some circuits, NOT in others.

Re: alpha 30% taper pots
Yes, I've read that before. But in all my years of living in Europe I can't recall ever coming across an 'A' pot that was linear.bluesfendermanblues wrote:Here's the reason for the confusion:paulster wrote:500KB is linear, 500KA is log (audio).

There may well be a European standard, but all the potentiometer manufacturers that you come across seem to use the US one, as they're not going to manufacture the same part with contradictory part codes for two different markets in a global marketplace.
