Clean 15-20 watts

Post by xtian »

Client is interested in something similar to Tweed Deluxe (5e3) but more clean headroom, less early breakup. What are good choices for a pair of 6V6?

Or pair of EL84? I've never heard a spitfire. Any headroom?

Ampeg circuits? I know Hull (?) hated distortion!

Deluxe Reverb or normal channel thereof if that's all that's needed?

Maybe yes. Do you go with a 20 watt OT for that?

Usually more headroom indicates more power although I like the way my Rocket with 6V6 sounds, it's not the cleanest when turned up.

Would a 5E3 with a LTP phase inverter do the job.?
Maybe with the PT and OT of the Delux Rev.?

Deluxe Reverb with a JBL.
Sub 6L6s for the 6V6s.
Sub diode rectifiers.
Nirvana.

What is your PT secondary voltage in this configuration? Stock Deluxe Reverb PT? Some were 330, others 351VAC...if on the high side and SS rectified, that would be ~485V on the 6L6 plates. Did you upgrade the OT for a bit more power handling?

I worked on a Princeton Reverb variant that had been upped to 6L6s and through an EVM-12L Classic 8R, wow, sounded great. Still GZ34 rectified but running a little hotter. Killer tone.

I have a BFDR, Fender Musical Inst, that I ran this way for many years.
Stock all around except for using 6L6s, at the 6V6 bias, and a diode rectifier plug in the rectifier tube socket.
Just a great amp, still is. It just works. I added a mid control for a little more control, but that was about it.
Very flexible setup.
Just sings.

I'll bet it sounds killer at higher voltage. Do you know your plate voltages with stock PT, 6L6s, and diode rectification?

Are you looking for actual measured 15-20 watts clean, or assuming how to get more headroom from a 5E3 style amp?

Fwiw, an LTP isn't going to help headroom in a 5E3.

More clean headroom from 5e3 style, switchable would be a bonus.

Perhaps adding switchable negative feedback?

1) Add a larger OT.

2) Look up "fixed bias cathodyne phase inverter" aka Paul C mod.

Bruce at Mission Amps has a kit for the mod.

This comes up all the time, not just here but all over the amp forums. If you want more headroom build / buy a bigger amp. That's why Leo offered so many amps and why his line was very vertical not horizontal, like things are today with 6 versions of the same thing at each strata. Just cause you have a 45W amp doesn't mean you have to turn it up. Want glorious cleans, get an old BF Showman and don't go past 3. Most people who used Twins bought them for their headroom, not their overall output, ever watch Lawrence Welk? Of course there's weight, size, power consumption etc, but just thought I'd play devil's advocate.

+1 on the 6v6, i have a 6v6 rockster and it has a great crunch but is certainly not good for cleans
