Thinking about 5E3 inspired amp ...

Post by wicker »

Well guys, you probably know that feeling that you must build something new (even when you don't have room for it :). Recently I've been thinking about some tweeds, first thought - 5E3 (or 5D3) inspired amp. Are there any things I should know before starting this kind of build ? I've read that the cab is a bit small and cannot accommodate all speakers (due to close chassis), I'm thinking about ordering one that is based upon this drawings:

which is probably close to oryginal. I'm also thinking about getting a custom chassis - a little bigger compared to oryginal one - mostly because oryginal amp is really cramped. I am also wondering whether filltering caps do not suffer due to heat from power tubes that are just bellow ? As for tubes, I'll go rather into SS then tube rectifier (a bit more headroom). Last thing that stucked in my mind is a box full of EL84's that is lying in my room and waiting for use (unfortuantelly no 6*6 tubes )....

I'd consider using a Garolite Board over the usual paper boards used for these type of amps. Should a paper board be or later become conductive you'll be pulling your hair out trying to fix the fault. Typically you'd hear scratchy volume and tone pots.

I don't find the chassis too cramped but the depth is a problem if you use turrets which get really close to the intestines of the input jacks.
