1908 Washburn tuners

Post by angelodp »

Hi, any luthiers in the crowd. Please look at this picture. It's from a 1908 Washburn parlor guitar. You see the split in the gear? I have two such splits on one side of the tuner set. is there any fix for this? Seems like it needs to be spot welded, but its so tiny an area. I can replace, but its a shame to loose these original tuners.

Any help gladly accepted.

Can the gear be removed?

That's a very small part to weld.

My first thought for it is maybe, depending on base metal, a silversmith or jeweler could silver solder it.

Yes I removed the gear and spindle. What I am trying is RED lock tight. I have tried that for other applications. The chuck on my drill press was not co-operating and I used a tiny amount of that Red and it's been on for over ten years. I know this is a very different application. I am letting it cure overnight and then give it a try. The welding idea might be a direction to take if this idea fails, or get replacements that are close to the vintage feel. Stewmac has them.

Thanks

Red loctite....fail...... regular Cyano this did the trick.....D holding. But its temp I fear. Looking into replacement tuners. The owner did a hack job on the bridge, so that has to come off and get reglued. Several top and bottom cracks. It is a sweet little guitar though. I may be looking for a nice parlour guitar for myself.

Silver solder is the only real way and the whle gear needs to be flowed..

There are luthiers who have hundreds of period half sets missing keys. you need a guy with a drawer full of identical gears with nowhere to be.
