Re: electro-harmonix 12ax7
Tried it once or twice in a noisy Liverpool.
I thought the sound was not bad- quite detailed and smooth at the same time, (was still hissy)but it did not inspire me the way a Philips 7025 did. . That is a rich sounding tube to my ears.
So I have been hunting for an equally good sounding tube that has less hiss in V1 and recently ended up with a CEI 12ax7A made in germany

Haven't tried in a wreck but have certainly found EH 12ax7's to be microphonic in other amps. YMMV of course...funkmeblue wrote:any microphonic problems?

they sound quite good in V2 or PI.
at the moment i got one in V2, V1 is a Tungsram and PI a Mullard.

I agree- this is a good V2 tube
I have it that way in my rocket combo
....although that is a cf tube then and not a gain stage

I've used a few of them in various amps.
They seem to be on the brighter side, at least when compared to a JJ.
Didn't have any problems with them.

Re: electro-harmonix 12ax7
Just a word of warning really:
I've got 3 Electro Harmonix 12AT7 tubes all bought from different vendors and none of them let me get past volume one on my wreck without screaming microphonics.
every other tube I have gets all the way to 10 with no problems, some quieter than others obviously.

OK, I actually like the GrooveTube 12AX7-R2 in V1. This is seemingly a wrong choice, sure, because its the Russian long plate 12ax7, a pretty average tube. Any, I don't know why it should be that the GT grading process could suss out a better tube but I think they have with this tube. The typical Electro Harmonix offering of this tube - identical in looks - doesn't compare.
I always carry one as a backup to the Tungsram. Yeah, the Tungsram is a great tube for the Express V1, hard to beat.

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
