Re: Anyone try these yet... ?
FWIW Mojo has had a collection of oil filled Vitamin T film caps available for over a decade. Made in Brazil, so that adds to the mystique and exotic-ness. Always meant to give 'em a try but never got around to it. So far. "Vitamin T" a play on Sprague Vitamin Q oil caps popular in the 1960's more o...

Re: Using silicon to glue down components
I've used ge silicone II for a long time because it explicitly does not have acid in the curing and is safe for electronics. Same - GE silicon RTV since college days 45 years ago. NEVER a problem with corrosion or any other form of degradation. Claims to the contrary are fake  news imho. Coll...

Re: Anyone used these film caps?
FWIW I've used some Panasonic 30 uF 800V film caps scored from Newark / Element14 a few years ago at cheap closeout prices, like $4 - 5 each. They find their way mostly into 70's Ampegs that feature B+ beyond 500V. I can foresee using them in SVT repairs, also Musicman and maybe Univox amps with big...

Re: Best clean tube amp for a pedal platform
I have 6 different amps ive built to test it out with. but only 1 is clean ab763 fender circuit . so I was just looking for my next build. AB763, that's the sort of amp that would get my vote for your project. Especially the Bandmaster & Bassman designs for 40-50W or Showman for 80-100W. (And the S...

Re: 2020 Monkeymatic Mixcube
Boy-o-boy you're on to something now - mic it up with a large-diaphragm condenser that's as big as the speaker cab. Then use the same speaker to assess your mono mixdown. Diabolical! Tease. No, but really, I am enjoying this little box as a guitar speaker. I ordered some tiny Clas...

Re: 2020 Monkeymatic Mixcube
So you left no space at all around the speaker, which is totally surrounded by isolating material ... :| Much like the original Auratone. It was just a small speaker 4" or maybe 3" in a simple small cube enclosure. We used to call them "Horrortone." I never opened one up, so don't know whether the ...

Re: Trainwreck Rocket bad sound when volume goes beyond 4
Tim try swapping the OT secondaries at the power tubes. Good luck Tim, what you're experiencing is most likely an ultrasonic oscillation. If you looked at your TW's output with an oscilloscope, you'd likely see a swarm of super hi frequency "hash". Hi frequency, that is, for audio, say 10K to 100KH...

Re: How to fix Mini Maglite 2 AA Battery Model?
I've found a problem area, especially after battery leaks, is where the spring at the bottom contacts the metal end cap. Removing the spring, scraping the area where it seats and the spring itself, often resolves a balky Maglite for me. Problems at the switch/bulb end, I've never been able to fix & ...

Re: Installing 3 Conductor AC Cord In Old Amps,,,
Some manufacturers, including highly respected Fender, often fused the neutral side of the AC feed. Not the smartest thing to do. In case of a fault that connected hot AC to chassis, the fuse would pop BUT hot AC remained as a hazard. When the first thing the hot side sees is the fuse then an open f...

Re: NOS Sovtek 5881 (1993)
Early 90's is when I started using the wafer-base Sovtek 5881's - in all sorts of amps. Never a problem. Tough as nails. And they were only $4 each, what a deal!

Jensen Jets Falcon: 40W, 95dB sensitivity, $162 for four including tax and shipping. Right there: I've used Jensen Falcons to good effect several times. Have a pair in my brown '62 Super and it sounds - super! At only $162 inclusive, for a set of 4, heck that's an unbeatable deal. Other "bargain pr...

Re: Whats the highest gain amp you know of with a 1K8/1uF fender style stage?
About 10 years ago a customer dropped off a Budda amp head here. It was in perfect working order - he wanted my review on build quality & sound. That amp sounded like a really good late 60s - early 70's Marshall 50W, very attractive to the ear. When I peered inside I noted the circuit pretty well fo...

Re: Capacitor value mismatch ok?
In cases like this I use 100 uF caps, never a problem, also they're easier to find. 350V rating as well. In SS rectified amps I go for the gusto, 220uF/350V. Plus there are brands much cheaper than overrated/overpriced/oversized Sprague Atoms, they also fit easily within the doghouse. F&T work perfe...

Re: Polytone Brute low output
The conversion went magically perfectly. Result is quiet at idle, and LOUD when turned up. Very happy with this. Power amp unit used is XH-M253, a 420w Class D mono power amp, that requires 24-0-24 AC. As I found, the Polytone Mini-Brute III has exactly 24-0-24 AC secondary, so it's a perfect match...
