Re: Bedroom recording a Wreck
Those don't sound too bad at all to me! Adding a second mic is where the real fun comes in. As already stated, you have to watch out for phasing issues with them. What model Sennheizer do you have on loan out of curiosity? Pop on some headphones and try to locate the mic(s) from the side of the cabi...

Re: need to record mic'ed cab for video
What I find funny about that interface, is it only has Line and Instrument level for the inputs... You want to plug a mic directly in, but there's no mic level setting?? That seems entirely odd to me. Microphones have impedance needs! This may seem obvious, but... When plugging in to record, have th...

Re: high gain lee jackson gp 1000
PCB's are difficult to mod, I don't see that pre as a decent modding platform unless you know what you're doing, and you know what it is TO be done. Lots of room for error on those boards, lifted pads and whatnot... Bypassing the clean channel could be done. Would it solve your problem? Well, that d...

Re: high gain lee jackson gp 1000
^Reel, That's what I was wondering about. Is that an artifact of using clippers in any of your experience? In some amps, diode clippers sound super awesome. In my measly one experience with trying them, they weren't what I was looking for. However, I have a built in noise gate with two 1N4148's, and...

Re: high gain lee jackson gp 1000
Dustin, not all metalheads are the same. ;) 1) Rune- so.. You're trying to get rid of the noise that the clipping diodes are making on the tails of notes? And, you want more gain? Do I have this correct as what you're trying to do/make happen? 2) The crosstalk you're speaking of, if inherent in the ...

Re: So, what's wrong with Switchcraft and JJ?
You hear a lot about what someone/a company has done wrong, and not always so much praise about what they've done right. Goes with everything. That's why I make my own opinions and judgement about the things I can first hand, even if I'm told not to. I'm a freakin rebel though, so, ymmv.

Re: high gain lee jackson gp 1000
Oh well, off to find some sandpaper. I appreciate you. We all do of course, no need for sandpaper, put it away! I was going to say something along the same lines, but getting myself ready for work at the time was more important. I'm personally still interested in what these mystical top secret mods...

Re: care and feeding of series heaters
Thanks, Matt! It's a paraphase, plucked directly from a Conn organ schematic. This amp is being built via the "building blocks" approach, with values adjusted per recommendations from someone so kind as to be helping and guiding me along this build with his tips, tricks, and trade secrets. I've agre...

Re: Breaking more silence... the painful kind.
Wow, Matt, I never thought you'd actually go "public" with this stuff. I think it's a wise decision on your part. I've racked my brain countless times and you've been in my thoughts every day since we started talking, a year ago almost to the day. All my ideas for you either had dead ends, or you've...

Re: care and feeding of series heaters
...so the order of the tubes can help with hum, the highest gain tube or the first tube in the pre amp. Thanks for taking the time to answer, I appreciate it! Maybe I should explain a couple more details for this example. The 12v filament supply being spoke of has a center tap if that matters or fa...

Re: care and feeding of series heaters
Another question to add... When using 12v AC filament with two identical 6v tube types in series, does it matter (for hum/noise) how you wire them, and if so, why?
For instance, F-4-5-4-5-F, vs F-4-5-5-4-F...

Re: care and feeding of series heaters
Thanks darryl, I appreciate the confirmation. What had me worried was this: Connecting heaters in series or series/parallel can cause voltage peaks in excess of the heater's ratings unless they have controlled warmup times. A heater in series with a dropping resistor will also take considerably long...

Re: care and feeding of series heaters
Interesting, and quite timely! Now I have to ask, can a pair of identical 6V tubes be run in series in an amp that has 12V tubes everywhere else on a 12V heater tap?
