Re: Recommendations for Dual-Gang Pot for Vol/Gain on Preamp

If you really want two volume, I would look into a dual pot BUT with separate control for each volume......or two totally separate volume pot. You really get different sound adjusting the two volumes, you can lower the first one and crank up the second, or vise verse. You get different sound.

Re: Weller WTCPT issue

I just bought a brand new one this week. My 32 years old weller that use the same tip but is a stand alone unit ( the pencil holder on top of the power unit) lasted until last week. It was my stupid mistake. For a while, I had to keep changing tips because I had to use a big tip to solder onto the c...

Re: Converting a 100w 6l6 to a 200w?

It would likely be cheaper to sell this one and build/find another one. If you end up having to put a bigger PT, OT and more tubes, even if you have the room and willing to drill holes and cut metal, your layout is going to severely compromised. You might run into all sort of problems. Look for a us...

Re: MARSH MAJOR TRANS?!

Weber is as cheap as it gets. I don't think PT is that important as long as it can provide the power reliably.

Scroll down towards the bottom and look for WPT100, it's $75. for the Marshall 100W.

Re: Direct coupled pentode to triode AC cathode follower

For the most part there is very little sonic difference to a gain control in a guitar amp. But if you use a linear taper pot or connect the log taper up backwards (so that with full CCW rotation, the pentode is in pentode mode), this makes more of subtleties that would otherwise occur in a very nar...

Re: thanks

What do you have to do to make the SF amps sound better? Hi Alan, first the "blackface" operation - has mostly to do with the output drive. Just a few parts, really, not the multi-hundred dollar 'serious mojo' operation some techs try to tell their customers. 330K grid leak resistors? put in 1M. So...

Re: Direct coupled pentode to triode AC cathode follower

What is the effect of Morph control to the sound? It almost like a negative feedback but to the screen grid instead. its mostly a form of gain control I kind of figure that as the screen grid control the plate current also. It's a negative feedback. But what is the advantage of using this instead o...

Re: thanks

I wasn't too thrilled with CBS Fenders either, ever since I first ran across 'em late 60's, HOWEVER I've worked on plenty of CBS Fenders, and plenty pre-CBS. Even the current models and reissues. If they sound lousy, I make 'em sound good. Thousands of 'em. No exaggeration. All customers happy. No ...

Re: output transformer - type of steel and affect on tone

Leo, as you know, some Fenders sound good, some sound like voice of God. But I don't think it's the transformers, more likely the way the PI is structured. Like HAD did. In the Bandmaster I mentioned, bone stock everything except for MM OT. RZZZZZZ !! Yikes! Tubes and circuitry all worked fine. Swa...

Re: output transformer - type of steel and affect on tone

I am no expert in OT and I am not going to comment on the steel used. I can only tell one of the experiment I did that I switch the OT between a Classic Tone Vibrolux OT and Classic Tone Marshall Plexi 50W OT. The dimension ratio and size are totally different. I fully expected to hear a clear diffe...

Re: solder type!

I use a MG Chemicals, it's much worst than Kester, the flux burn even faster. Should I get 63/37 or 60/40?

Re: solder type!

What is the difference between 60/40, 66/44 and 63/37?

I don't understand 66/44 because the other two are the Pb/Sb ratio, but 66/44 does not add up to 100!!!

But anyway, I am in market for Kester solder and I don't know which one to buy. I have bee using 0.40 and I am surprised it's harder to find.

Re: speaker power handling

This is a little off topic. I don't know why Santana use EV or Altec. He adjust his amp very dark and fuzzy. The sound in the recording or even when you stand farther away in the concert is all from the PA and it sounds nothing like if you hear directly from the amp. He was my idol and I went to 5 o...
