Re: bass head?
Thats what I was thinking. My 28 special (tweed bassman) is super dirty with 2 5881's. I think I'll have to tell him to get a ss amp for the price range he has.

bass head?
I've got one of my buddies from work asking to price him a tube bass head for his peavey 4x10 cab.
Opinions? Money will be a factor.
I know you want a lot of wattage for tube bass amps but how much exactly?

Re: Seven Lessons from How Private Equity Wrecked Guitar Center
I don't shop at GC since they ripped me off. I bought a sm58 mic from them. A year or so later I took it back in pristine condition because I needed some guitar gear that I was planning on buying from there anyways. I let it go for $45 like a dumba** for store credit. I bought what I needed, came up...

Where the led's lack capacitance wouldn't you loose the frequency filtering?

Or you can do it the old fashion way and grab a ruler and start measuring.

Re: Advice on thinning the herd
Rp you are right. Out of all the musicians I know maybe 6 play tube amps. Most of which are circuit board amps. The most real of the bunch is a 1978 jmp 2204. I'd happily sell them tube amps, but hearing the price before hearing it in person scares away 90% of them. The exception is my buddy who abo...

Re: Half power wiring
Wonderful! A conclusion has been reached.
Thank you everyone for the input. Special thanks to Martin.
Upon seeing that the half power switch is a not ALL that great idea, I am thinking of adding a passive loop instead. Gotta have something extra

Re: Half power wiring
That clears up a lot. Thank you Martin.
So would a more effective half power switch be turning the pentode into a triode? I've seen this done with el34's in fixed bias, and in a single ended cathode biased el84 amp.
I'm rethinking the half power switch more now. But I would still like to know.

Re: Advice on thinning the herd
Phil I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum, and welcome the other end when I make it there! I'm 22, turning 23 in april, and I have built more cool stuff than I would've ever dreamed of a few years ago. The only problem now is I build way more stuff than I play! Builds include a 2 's5e3, modified ...

Re: Half power wiring
Ok so there is a conundrum here. I understand the plate needs to be connected for the ot to see the impedance. Now the cathode also needs to be connected for the plate to see the impedance? Why is this? Is the plate's impedance seen through connecting to the cathode to ground? Now on to martin's dis...

Re: Half power wiring
Xtian: Now that would def. Need the speaker tap switched to compensate for the missing plate loads. Aside from that, good point.

Re: Half power wiring
Martin: Ah I should've looked over it better before I posted. Just drew it on the fly. Would you have to change the speaker load since the plates would still be connected? Lefty: Duely noted. I probably would never use it, but people seems to like the thought of it. I havnt used one so I figured I'd...

Half power wiring
Just curious to what all of you think is the best method for a half power switch.
For a 4x el84 amp cathode biased, is it better to completely lift one pair of cathodes from ground (left drawing) or parallel 2 resistors to half the resistance (right drawing)?
