Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?
Vishay caps are very good too. I got some recently any they were streets ahead of IC caps.

Re: Illinois brand capacitors still bad?
I think the TAD caps are pretty good too. Here are cap values and ESR. Before I replaced the old Mallory caps in the SF Twin Reverb, I measured from the negative end of the cap and its earth connection and there wasn’t any leakage current measured on my multimeter. I do wonder sometimes if it’s such...

Re: What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
I use ceramic sockets in my builds as I try to avoid the 2 to 3 arc over. None of my amp have had this fault and my wiring is always tidy. I have accidentally switched on an amp without a load but I have yet to see this turn into a fault. I’m not saying it won’t happen, it just hasn’t happened yet. ...

Re: Conductive boards again.
Fiberglass / G-10 Doesn't Mojo or Doug Hoffman make new boards for Fenders.? If i were to pull all the components and wires off the fiber board for cleaning, I would just toss that board out and install a glass board as above. :) Hoffman make G10 boards and Mojotone makes fibreboards I heard that a...

Hum in the boost circuit of a silverface MV Twin Reverb.
I’m still working on a Silverface Master Volume Twin Reverb with the boost switch. It initially had a blown power transformer which I got rewound, then I noticed the board was conductive which I mentioned on this board. This was allowing the tremolo/vibrato oscillator to bleed into the audio (P.I. s...

Re: My first experience with Mullard reissue 12AX7’s
I found out today that Amplified Parts are going to stiff me for the 12AX7 as they don’t accept returns on microphonic valves. I was a bit annoyed as I don’t recall asking to purchase a microphonic 12AX7.
Yeah, I think I won’t be buying Mullard again.

Re: Synergy Capacitors
So does that mean they are the same as the next gen SoZo caps? Hi Mark, This is what I told, yes; that they are the same construction as the original line of SoZos. I only have spoken word on that but don't know who is making them. The Synergy caps are reported to be made in the US. Some months ago...

Thanks for the link to the article. I will read it. I thought I saw a damaged ceramic socket. That would be quite a feat.trobbins wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2024 10:43 am Photo of pin 2-3 arc damage on ceramic socket in attached article on such protection issue.

Re: What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
I agree with the notion that flyback voltage and dust with some moisture content on the socket is likely to be the fatal combination, drawing the arc along the surface. Seems like giving the power tube sockets on older amps a good cleaning with alcohol might be a good idea. Thanks for your reply Ma...

Re: What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
I think it's also due to the ac filament power. Pin 3 is highly positive D.C. Pin 2 at a rate 50 or 60 times a second goes from being positive ac to zero and then that starts the attraction of D.C. Then pin2 then goes highly negative in relation to the D.C. Polarity of pin 3, so even a higher level...

My first experience with Mullard reissue 12AX7’s
I hadn’t used the Mullard reissue valves before but it’s my understanding they are Sovtek made valves. I thought they might be good for this 1980 2203 amp. I got the valves from Amplified Parts (as I can’t purchase from CE Distribution.) I have arranged to get TAD 12AX7 to replace it, and contacted ...

Re: Synergy Capacitors
Does anyone know who manufactures Synergy capacitors? I spoke with Robert from Valvestorm a while back and he said that they are made in the US and the Synergy brand formed after Sozo went overseas (China or Taiwan). He said they are the same as what a Sozo was before they went overseas, just US ma...

What do you think causes pins 2 and 3 to arc in octal sockets.
I was talking to someone on You Tube about the octal sockets burning between pins 2 and 3. His opinion was that it’s caused by flyback from a speaker connection going open circuit. I don’t know if I entirely believe this (of course I could be wrong) as it would be easier for the arc to go through ai...
