Re: Spitfire-ish
Switch to a choke instead of a 1k resistor between B+1 and B+2. That will get the voltages on the screen, PI, and Preamp up. I use the standard fender deluxe style choke on lots of my builds when I need one. It's cheap and it works. Get rid of the resistors between the power tube plates and the OT....

Re: New TAD 6L6 WGC - anyone try these?
I have a pair of them. I only briefly tried them in an amp which normally runs on 6V6s. The 6L6WGCs sounded excellent in that amp, very warm but yet with a lot of detail.

Re: YOUR thoughts on gain pot value
Excellent post. If you keep the RC time constant the same, then reducing the pot value reduces gain by reducing the load on the next stage. It can also have other tonal effects (you can read more about that elsewhere, of course). I think you meant to say "reduces gain by increasing the load on the n...

Did you ground the speaker jack to the chassis?

Re: Here's an idea some may wanna try
Sounds very interesting. I hate the normal presence control on high gain amps. Decoupling the NFB only for the highest frequencies (that's what the regular presence control does) makes it only harsh when turned up full, with very little adjustable range. I guess you ditched the presence control in f...

That is a beautiful amp! It should be absolutely living room admissible.

Re: Honey Badger
Sharp eyes guys ! Lots of horror stories about the noise floor on #39. Hi Bob, Your work is looking good! I once built the #39 preamp in my SLP RI (now it's changed to Avenger spec) and did not find the noise floor to be any worse than other high gain preamps. The #39 circuit is not that high gain ...

Re: Matchless 15 watt with 5e3 OT
Congrats!
I once had my Sundown A-50 converted to a Spitfire build with a dual 6V6 power amp. Sounded pretty good cranked but was very loud.
Have fun with that amp,
Stephan

Re: Clubman build
If you don't get any voltage on the EF86 cathode, the cathode bypass cap could be shorted. I would check that first.

Re: Carr Artemus volume control
I was intrigued by that amp as well. As regards the tone controls the bass control could be a cap paralleled with a variable resistor. I don't think it's like Matchless Clubman or Chieftain since they do load the first gain stage considerably. The mid switch is probably similar to the Chieftain mid ...

Re: Clubman build
Never built a Clubman but a Chieftain w/o reverb. That was my 3rd complete build and it was the most straight forward. I played it on several gigs with a country rock band and was very happy with the tone I was getting. I used a turret board and even put in two spare turrets so that I could change i...

Re: Schematic for "Hoso 56"?
I have built two amps based on the HoSo56. One started off very close to what was developed on the Hoffmann Forum. With the other I tried to cross the HoSo with the SLO. It has more gain than the other. Both are fun amps to play. I attach a schematic which shows one evolution state of my HoSo56 vers...

Re: 6v6's in my plexi ?
6v6's are still very loud at full voltage (loud enough for my gigs) I like the 6v6's a lot better then the yellow jackets (el84). The 6v6's sound closer to the el34's then the el84's do. I know that shouldn't be but, just my opinion. I agree with this. EL84s do sound very different to my ears than ...

Re: 3M3 and 10pF pass filter in Fender Reverb amps
I used a 2M2 with a 15pF to get (at least in theory) to the 4.82kHz cutoff. As I understand it, the 3M3//10pF as per schematic sets the treble content of the amp. Yes, it does it, but it's not the same to use a 3M3//10p, 2M2//15p or 220k//150p. While the frequency of the filter is the same, the vol...

Re: "Sound" of master volumes
Hi Folks Is this normal or is it that this type of MV is not best suited to this amp? And I guess I should build an Air Brake if I want a more realistic sound at lower volume? Phil, Yes, this is normal. The reason for it is that htis master is after the phase inverter (PI) and the amp has a feedbac...
