Re: Beam Blockers
that's posibble. So if it wasn't an open cell acoustic foam with the proper firmness it may not have been an ideal experiment. Wink
but as i said, i really liked it. just not in a live situation.

Re: Beam Blockers
it was a polyfoam i got in a local foam-store. and yes, i got the 3" hole in the middle. as i said i prefer the sound with the foam for home or studio use, but not for live settings with a band. but thats only my taste. maybe other like the sound with the foam better, even in live situations. and fo...

Re: Beam Blockers
i had the possibility to try the foam-donut last night in a live situation at a concert with my band. and i have to say, i didn't like them. honestly, at home they are great. even if you play your amp very loud. maybe even in the studio for some recording. but for me definately not for concerts. i c...

Re: Beam Blockers
i've had the beamblockers installed in all of my amps for the last 5 years and i liked it untill now. as i read the thread at the gear page i thought i give it a try with the foam which costs only a few cent. the difference is amazing. you've got allmost an 180° angle where the sound is the same as ...

Re: Express Hiss Issues
i did some tweaking and research again. i tried allmost every resistor combination (carbon film, metal film, metal oxyd) in the amp. conclusion: the 100k plate res in v1+v2 hiss a lot. even with metal oxyd resistors. i tried all sorts of different settings. i tried v1a 68k, v1b 56k v2a 82k and the h...

Re: Tubes in an Express
try the electro harmonix el34 the come very close to the nos siemens.
and the preamp i would suggest v1+v2 tungsol 12ax7 and v3 ei with telefunken anode.
thats only my taste foer non nos tubes.
but as you know, taste varies.

Re: Asteroid 60
the plate resistance is the same, otherwise you would change the plate-current.
it's just the way the AC-signal has to go trough. the DC on the plate stays the same.
the sound in the grad position is softer, less gain and less attack.

take a look at this.
http://ampgarage.com/forum/download/file.php?id=5981
in the end there should be a plan for the cab.

Re: Express Hiss Issues
glen, you said a while ago that your original express had something like 50mv of noise coming out of your speaker with the settings on 12. i measured mine and i had something like 42mv. after the measuring i tried the grounding scheme as in the 80W wreck from allyn http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtop...

well, as soon as you plug the powerchord the other way into the wall, the fuse is on the other side.

Fast/Grad VS Fat/Gain switch
in both builds i had a fast/grad switch installed, but i didn't really like the sound of the grad position. too much muddy bass and the noise/hiss was quite a lot, but i didn't know better because i couldn't compare to a real wreck for the amount of noise/hiss, so i thought it can't get better. fina...
