My philosophy regarding Cut controls...
I didn't care for the cut control as drawn with the .0047 cap and the 250k pot. I tried the .0022 cap as well but didn't like it either. Just got too dull past the halfway point. I then put a 47k resistor in series with the cut pot so the range is now 50k-300k and it makes the whole sweep more usef...

Re: Santana Amp KIT? anyone?
For newer Santana tones he talked about a Marshall head that he brought to all of the studios around the time of Supernatural in a Guitar Player interview. In the mid 2000's he was seen playing a Two Rocks at many gigs and then he got into real Dumbles.

That is the schematic that Andy Marshall sent to JCA. I still haven't gotten around to drawing up my mods- my bad!Cantplay wrote:Steve:

Update
I have been pleased as punch with the blackfaced Rhythm/Clean channel but now I am getting bored with the Lead channel, which sounds great but is pretty much a one trick pony, er, maverick. I like overdrive channels that clean up when you back off the volume on your guitar or the gain on your amp (p...

Re: Helpful hint for the day!
Oh, and before you freak out and decided your soldering station died, make sure you are not trying to solder with buss wire  I'll find myself wondering why the damn solder is getting so hot and burning my fingers! Speaking of buss wire, I was going to mention that I have two rolls of 22...

Helpful hint for 11/16/11: The Myth of Audio taper pots
The Myth of Audio Taper Pots It is one of those things that we all just assume is true... we are dealing with audio signals so we obviously want an audio (logarithmic) taper on volume controls. Period. I beg to disagree. If you are turning the volume control up from 0 then an audio taper usually wo...

Re: Helpful hint for the day!
More hints are what I wanted here- especially hints from other people since I don't learn much reading my own hints. So is your impedance selector switch make-before-break or break-before-make, and does it really make a difference for a tube amp? I know that a lot of Marshall OT's were trash...

I went ahead and Blackfaced (Lone Starred?) my Maverick!
While looking at schematics I noticed that the Maverick Clean channel preamp (Rhythm in Mesa terminology) is practically identical to that of the Subway Blues, which in turn is like the clean channel of the Subway Rocket. Not a terrible clean channel but certainly nothing to write home about! I had ...

Helpful Hint for 11/13/11: Get a pin vise
A pin vise with a selection of small gauge drill bits comes in very handy if you are repairing or rewiring a printed circuit board. I was having a hell of a time replacing the ceramic treble cap with a mica one on a Mesa Maverick since it was wedged between the bass cap and filter caps. I could not ...

Express tone stack with Fender 250kA pots?
I'm thinking about rewiring the Rhythm channel of my Mesa Boogie Maverick as an Express. Hey- it has 3 gain stages with the tone stack after the first. That sure sounds like an Express candidate to me. The tone stack uses 250kA pots for treble and bass (like a BF Fender). I know that the W...

Making progress
I sketched out the Rhythm channel and plotted out which components (mainly caps) I want to remove from the circuit. Most of them go to ground and I think it should be easier and safer to desolder that end (less chance of screwing up another connection and those parts are certainly crammed in there.)...

Helpful Hint for 11/11/11: Adding and subtracting resistors
But can you use string to mix up epoxy? I think not... Helpful Hint for 11/11/11: Adding and subtracting resistors We all know how to add two resistors of the same value wired in parallel- the resulting resistance is half of the resistor value. It gets more complicated when you are adding resi...
