Re: Mercury Magnetics: Studio Pro Upgrade Kit For AC4TV
The simple circuit mods I did on my brother's AC4TV made it a much better amp ... It's interesting that there is a lot of similarity to what I ended up with, from trying to do the bare minimum mods and what Mercury does ... except I modded the tone control to be a LiteIIb tone control. --==-- I'm st...

Re: Mercury Magnetics: Studio Pro Upgrade Kit For AC4TV
... Wow! I guess just replacing the iron wasn't convincing enough for MM. The stock circuit is fine clean at low volumes but pushed into distortion it's horrible with the DC biased second preamp triode, fizzy, fuzzy horrid ... ... the Merc Mag "Upgrade" removes nearly all the original compone...

Re: Mercury Magnetics: Studio Pro Upgrade Kit For AC4TV
I did some modding on an AC4TV of my brother's ... I focused on getting rid of the fizzy tone ... - 10uf cap on v1a cathode (C16 - 1uf stock) - pull the v1b cathode bypass cap (C11 - that was the 10uf I used in v1a) - pull the 'tail' cathode cap on v1b (C12) - jumper C12 to remove the DC grid bias o...

Re: Why does Marshall use 1K 5W Screen resistors
There's a difference in screen dissipation between beam tetrodes (6L6) and pentodes (EL34) ... the screen in a pentode has a higher dissipation so it needs a larger resistor to keep the dissipation in check ...

Re: Marvel PTs
I decided to resurrect this old thread, as I just acquired a 989 Marvel Electric PT, the BF Super PT that AES sells as 989T-P22798. This going in an application that will use all of its 200mA HT rating and maybe a tad more. My question is this--anyone know what kind of service factor Marvel puts in...

Re: Non-Traditional 15 watt Liverpool with PCB
It doesn't look to me like you have the 1k screen dropping resistor connected to the second filter cap ??? have you done that under the board?
The presence control is pretty sensitive and can cause issues ... I don't like the 'newer' style presence control like used in the Liverpool.

Re: 5E3 vs 5D3 as bass amp
Just last Saturday I played a bass through my brother's modified 6K6 5E3 amp. I think it has smaller coupling caps than stock (0.022uf throughout) ... I know it has a large cathodyne grid stopper (470k) The instrument channel is a stock 5E3 input channel, the microphone channel is a 5F2 (not 5F2A) i...

I'd be in for a Dumbleator board/trannie set

Re: AC4HW
curious, has anyone here modded one of the AC4TV's to sound better? mine is great clean, but cranked up it doesn't give up the goods like a good vox....have been considering a HW but it can't be that difficult of a circuit to mod a bit? I modded my brother's AC4TV to get rid of the fizzy tone when ...

Re: 5e3 problem
Does the ugly distortion go away if you turn your guitar volume down?
--==--
Here a section of the layout showing where to add the 470k cathodyne grid stopper to stop blocking distortion.

Re: 5e3 problem
Okay so you don't think my cold solder suggestion is correct? I do agree that the solders should be checked over! The weird control interaction is normal for a 5E3 and blocking distortion is a huge issue with a 5E3 ... Granted the recording doesn't sound the same as I've heard with my 5E3 experimen...
