Re: what amp/Jeff Beck

Reeltarded nailed it. Reamped through larger system. Steve Prior (tech) controls some of his switching (clean to scream), foldback dude controls delays reverbs etc. Beck likes lexicon reflex for somethings which he controls on the fly and the usual wah, flange, ring mod, etc. great tone, and those h...

Re: Robbens 102 Amp Settings

Perhaps a combination of all the above: 30% Vol pot that's but reads 35%, very gainy 12ax7 in V1, K resistors 5% under, Plate resistors 5% over. Could easily add up to 10-20% more in gain. As mentioned with bass pot, could be a little funky. I built an amp that had all the tork between 1-4 on the ba...

Noticed in Tony's video 11 at 43 seconds the runaway pickup truck and the driver chasing it, LoL.

Re: 102 Feedback City

What causes a coupling cap to be microphonic as opposed to a normally operating cap? Is this trait detectable before the cap is installed in the amp? Don't know what causes it and don't think you'd be able to tell prior to installing it.I only notice it after I changed out the filter caps while tes...

Re: 102 Feedback City

experienced a similar thing with an old P/P 6v6 amp from the 60s. Owner wanted it recapped as it was all original and in need of a service. The amp had amazing sustain and had the harmonic feedback thing happening on some notes even at very low volume. Turned out one of the (v1)cathode caps was leak...

Re: Best carbon comp supplies?

Oops your right Jim I shouldn't drink and drive a keyboard. I've done that with new pots myself in the past to raise the value to where I want it. Forgot about Ohms law, more carbon = less resistance: less carbon = more resistance. I remember trying to scrape a 2watt CC many years ago and didn't suc...

Re: Best carbon comp supplies?

to get a higher value from new comps, just dremel/shave off the resistor til you get the right value, with a METER connected of course! jim[/quote] Can you explain how that would work. I've read that it's an old Ham radio trick but doesn't make sense logically. CCs are a mixture of clay and carbon a...

Re: Best carbon comp supplies?

ANyone used little demon 1 watters? Just checked Nebraska surplus too for some old carbon, plenty to choose from but gees that stuff is exxy. Nice shots. Threw out a box of those old white resistors a couple of years ago, wasn't confident using them in a new build, oh well how was I to know. Are yo...

Re: Choosing Slots for 12AX7s

Same. I find it's good to check after a couple of hours burn in as they can drift a little, new tubes more so. I just checked my three 12AX7s on my VTV tester. One is higher gain than the other two but the triodes are not as well DC balanced, so that goes in V1. One of the remaining two is well bala...

Re: Any luck with Mercury Magnetics tone clone OT?

Thanks Bill It's good to know that others have used these OTs with success. I do have another which I can sub in but it means pulling boards to get at bolts/nuts. I'm not 100% sure on the steel chassis as I've always used aluminium, I've read it makes no diff but I'm not convinced. As for tubes I'll...

Any luck with Mercury Magnetics tone clone OT?

Their blackface Twin Reverb tone clone series. Using one at the moment for a 100w high plate build along with the power transformer. Voltages are perfect all around. Correct caps, resistors, pots etc. lead dress looks tidy, nothing looks out of place but I can't get the OD channel to sound any good....
