Re: What makes an Orange “hairy?”
I was dissappointed/underwhelmed by Orange sound. Most guitar amps, specially if intended to be overdriven, cut some Bass for good reason, or sound becomes mushy when pushed too far (of course Doom players count that as a feature ;) ) Orange does not cut Bass, and suffers from that problem. So much ...

Re: Plate Resistors on power tubes?
IF original amp came with those plate resistors, leave them.
The "power/voltage increase" expected will be *absolutely* inaudible, while even slight instability will ruin your sound big time, why risk it for nothing?

Suggest you post a new thread instead of sticking to the end of a solid state Polytone thread.

Re: Widowmaker or not?
Will expand later but as starter: 1) do NOT repeat NOT measure resistance with the amp plugged in, PERIOD 2) chassis IS connected directly to mains plug (directly here meaning no galvanic isolation) . That they do that through a 47k current limiting resistor does not make it exactly "safe". 2.7mA cu...

Re: JCM900 4100 IC supply problem
Weird.
What´s the voltage at the other end of the power resistors feeding those Zeners?
Does that voltage sag a lot?
Do you have a clean readable schematic to upload? Mine is a murky mess, unreadable values.

Re: Faceplate for amp
Personal opinion: IF we are talking a front panel, with many "anchor points", say pots, jacks, maybe push-in switches with a narrow edge around , etc. plus front panel is thickish, say >0.8mm aluminum or >1mm acrylic or polycarbonate, I can trust just them and leave alone. Now on back panels (and si...

Re: Question About Velvet Flocking
The proper way to apply defined graphics, such as your text or drawings, and what those old Manufacturers used, is to silk screen apply a special adhesive, that allows to get precision fine lines and edges orb text if you wish, and then as said above, apply flocking through a sieve for uniform sprea...

Re: What's your favourite grillcloth to work with?
I live in a large city (like you do) so sometimes when I want an alternative, go to the "clothes supplier´s neighbourhood" where all the cloth shops are, and walk around. Go inside every shop, look around, because sales attendants have no idea of what I want, and in any case I want to be surprised. ...

Yes, definitely. That said, OP asked about "chime" and that hints at him wanting "clean sparkly extended highs". What´s good for Country, Surf, Funky or old British invasion sound, including early Beatles, of course it´s the opposite of what High Gain people want, including you :) Never heard that p...

Re: Celestion V10-60 vs. G10N-40
Typical frequency curves are meant for Hi Fi speakers (we are a TINY market by comparison) so show full Hi Fi range: 20Hz to20kHz, which might be confusing. Guitar range is WAY narrower, from 80Hz to, say, 5 kHz, 6kHz tops, solet´s focus on that. I edited your graphs to show so. 1) area within Green...

Re: "Blows Fuses" Debugging
Thanks RG Yes the only way is to go step by step, checking along the way. I´d add: try to resist the impulse of "now that I´m here, I´ll improve/mod/replace whatever". Unless you see something gross , say an exploded/leaking/bulged capacitor, a toasted resistor, carbhonized socket or PCB, etc. leave...

Re: $10 Eminence speaker any good?
That cabinet size is fine. 8 x 10" may be good but then you are spending "real speaker" money, either from Scumback/Celestion/Eminence/Weber, etc. . Now for 20$ they can´t go so low, so go ahead ... and this is definitely not a bad speaker, at all, considering its size. Might be the ticket for a sin...

Well, yes and no :) Looonnnggg ago Rola Corporation bought Celestion UK but they were kept separate from USA. In USA a "Mother/Investment Corporation" , I think it was called something like "Mutter Corporation" at some time owned both Jensen as we know it , based in Chicago, and another speaker Fact...

Re: Skipping the PT?
Millions of AA5 radios and quite a number of small guitar amps were made that way, and for exactly that reason. If the chassis is isolated they can be made safe, even better with a three-conductor power cord. Filaments were powered directly from the line voltage, with all tubes having the same curr...

You ask for a comparison yet show only one tone stack, can you post both side by side?what the difference is compared to the Marshall ones?
Otherwise it´s hard to answer.
