DIY patch cables, major signal loss - what gives??

I was making some patch cables to connect the pedals on my board with some low profile switchcraft input jacks and Canare GS-4. I tested two of them after they were finished and there was a significant signal loss. It doesn't make sense, i used the same cable to make a different patch cable and ther...

Re: Which resistor do I remove?

Thanks for the help guys. I was unsure whether it was R38 or R39 that I had to remove, but I think i've got my answer. The problem is that I started this mod, like, a year ago and I removed R38 without sufficiently checking to see which was the right one to remove. The good news is that R38 and R39 ...

Which resistor do I remove?

I'm trying to install the Deville Clickless bypass mod in a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble pedal. The instructions indicate that I need to remove. I've attached the installation guide, indicating which resistor needs to be removed, as well as the schematic for the pedal itself. Could somebody point out w...

Artificially aging an amp by using off-value components

Anybody ever attempt to recreate the sound of a well aged amp by replacing caps and resistors with others that have differing values? A stupid question really, as I'm sure any true amp building fanatic has experimented endlessly on such things. How do you go about deciding which values to alternate ...

Re: How to create/design a layout from a schematic?

yes, there is...it's what I do for a living (among other things)..and JazzGuitarGimp (Lou Rossi) as well...among others here.... all we need is the mechanical constraints and your choice of I/O hardon-ware  That's pretty cool man. How might you recommend to me to go about doing it myself? I re...

How to create/design a layout from a schematic?

I'd like to build a clone of my Fender Blues Jr., but all I can locate online is a schematic. Some amps have specific layouts that really help with building an amp from scratch, but this one has been hard to find. Is there some good methods to designing a layout just from a schematic alone? Anybody ...

Re: Need Help - Issues w. Pot Replacement

I have one other question: For the rest of the pots to be replaced, how can I determine which hole from the PCB is the outgoing signal (to go INTO the pot) and which is the signal that will flow OUT of the pot? I have the schematic, but i'm not educated enough on reading them to understand which is ...

That was a deliberate drug reference.

Re: Need Help - Issues w. Pot Replacement

Just wondering, if I had the ground improperly soldered, wouldn't that cause problems when I turned on the amp? Like incredible amounts of noise? Thanks! It's properly soldered as far as the pot is concerned. Just backwards for those of us who insist clockwise is more . Haha, yes my OCD will not ac...

Re: Need Help - Issues w. Pot Replacement

No, not at all. There is a way you could wire it backwards and the signal is grounded that might or would make noise. You just have the wires to the opposite terminals. It's all good! Go fix that and be happy! I swear it. ;) If the pot ever operates backwards, it's the terminals are swapped. Ah ver...

Re: Need Help - Issues w. Pot Replacement

You have the ground side hot and the hot side as ground. Swap the outsides with each other. I'll try that for sure. Are you talking about swapping the outsides on the POT or on the circuit board. Not sure if you can tell from the picture, but there's 3 holes on the PCB that were previously soldered...

Need Help - Issues w. Pot Replacement

Hey all - so a bit of background for you: I'm refurbishing an old Fender M-80 1X12 amp. The pots were all extremely scratchy and staticky when you'd turn them, sometimes signal would cut out completely so I opted to replace them instead of cleaning them out (tried deoxy cleaner, didn't work). Right ...

Best way to learn to read and understand a schematic

I'm very much a newbie at amp building but very interesting in getting my feet wet, but my problem is that I don't understand how to read schematics to the extent that I can apply it to building an amp properly. How might I go about learning to understand such things? I've got a few books on tube am...
