Could it possibly be a Matsushita tube. They were set up by Mullard and I know that there EL34's look identical to a Mullard except for the guide pin hole. I see RCA branded tubes on Ebay quite frequently being sold as Mullards but are actually Matsushita tubes.

As Roe mentioned, the variac was not necessary for "Larry's" method. I was just being over cautious because this was a new build and I wanted to be sure I had not made any mistakes.

+1 on checking the tube sockets for carbon traces. I had a tube flashover in one of my builds and I tried cleaning the socket several times but I kept blowing new tubes in that particular socket. I finally ended up replacing the socket and the amp has run fine ever since.
