Re: DLM Ideas
I've watched a few videos but unfortunately they weren't the best quality and the amp is no longer on Allen's website. I might build the amp with the Komet Pre Amp first and see how it sounds. Might end up gutting it a few times trying different configurations. Only way to learn.
Edit: After doing a bit of reading it would seem that part of the PI sound is how the PI cancels out Even Order Harmonics just like a Push Pull Stage does. This would explain why a Single Ended Amp always sounds a lot fatter than a Push Pull Amp. So like Matt H said an actual PI is required for this. The amp will still sound fatter than a Push Pull as there will still be more even order harmonics but it will be closer than having no cancellation of Even Order Harmonics at all.

Re: DLM Ideas
I know several of us have scoured things and there isn't much info on the actual circuit. The WEBMASTER at http://www.trainwreck.com/?page_id=34 gives us a hint about it being a high gain amp. He also mentions that it was intended as 6 to 12 watt amp... so maybe there is a clue as to what tubes might have been used. Assuming the output is an octal (probably a safe bet) then maybe he intended anything from a 6L6GC to a KT-88.
Seems like I heard something about a Marshall preamp as well, but I wouldn't let that influence you much more than any other unfounded rumor. I think there used to be some pictures from Wreckboy that showed it in a standard sized Wreck cabinet... I can't find them in my archives so take that with a grain of salt as well.
Good luck, looking forward to your build reports.

Re: DLM Ideas
Here is a description of the amp from wreckboy and Hogy.
Colossal did the front control layout I believe.

Re: DLM Ideas
Ah ok I see Matt, sorry I wasn't thinking straight earlier with regards to the even harmonic cancellation.
I've read the posts by Wreckboy and seen the photos but like you said RJ there isn't much info on the actual circuit. Although after looking at the photo Fowler posted again the two inputs do point to a JCM800 Pre Amp. I don't think I've ever read anything in regards to the 2nd input but if someone could at least say if there was a bit drop in gain using that 2nd input I'd say for definite that it was a JCM800 style Pre Amp.

Re: DLM Ideas
Dr z made a couple for joe Walsh from ken's schematics
anything worth doing, is worth doing right
Re: DLM Ideas
Hi,
may I ask, from what kind of Master we are talking with the DLM? Where is it located? Is there any schem about orig. DLM?

Re: DLM Ideas
It was most likely a pot in place of the grid leak resistor for the output valve.

Re: DLM Ideas
I wish wreckboy would put up a pic of that schematic or the guts before he sells it... He knows we want it! Or... Maybe someone or group of someones could buy and divulge.

Re: DLM Ideas
It would have to be a big group of people! Wonder why he is selling the amp? Lot of personal history between him and Ken included in the sale by the looks of it.

Re: DLM Ideas
I guess I sorta hope we will never know... mostly because I think we would be greatly disappointed. I do expect that eBay might see a record number of photo downloads and I have to say it's great to get a look into the back of it.
We all though we were so clever using those can caps only to find that the grand master used them ahead of us. Does anybody recognize that output transformer? It looks like a pretty significant chunk of iron.
